About this deal

Note that the movie’s final three minutes used 35mm film and looked substantially better than the rest of the film – though still not great, as edge haloes created distractions. They don’t always – or usually – tell us why the material didn’t make the final cut, but they’re nicely frank about problems related to the scenes. Much more introspective than most programs of its ilk, “Rage” starts with an extended discussion of the worldwide potential for deadly disease. Detail is the tiniest bit sharper than the DVD, but it's a minor improvement that's an inherent product of the increased resolution. Deleted Scenes with optional commentary: Almost ten minutes worth of deleted scenes, all with optional commentary available. While the image isn't going to win any awards, this film and its extras are just too good to pass up. Even better is the very clever use of John Murphy's soundtrack, which starts very softly and slowly rises in tempo and volume at the same time. Next comes a generous collection of "Deleted Scenes and Alternate Endings" that also include optional director commentary. So, grab the movie and some popcorn and cuddle up this Father’s Day with some rather terrifying movie moments. To top it off, the soundscape generally doesn't feel very organic, with key elements (including voices) often sounding disjointed from other sound effects. As scientists and theorists line up in front of the camera, I eventually found myself wondering if the featurette was ever going to explore the filming of '28 Days Later' at all. Although the six deleted scenes (9 minutes) don't add much to the proceedings, the real value here lies in the bleak alternate endings (13 minutes). Pure Rage" (24 minutes) is a unique behind-the-scenes featurette that begins with an investigation into viral epidemics and outbreaks.

When the four reach the deserted blockade, Frank is infected by blood from a dripping corpse and is immediately shot by hiding soldiers, who then commandeer the cab and take Selena, Jim and Hannah to a fortified mansion under the command of Major Henry West (Christopher Eccleston). The performances are strong, the tone is refreshingly realistic, and the director brings a unique touch to the horror genre that sets the film apart from the crowd. Some are in cages, some are strapped to tables, and one is forced to watch endless videos of horrible atrocities.

If only they could have acheived all that without having to rob every idea from their genre predecessors. days after the initial outbreak, a man named Jim (Cillian Murphy) awakens from a coma in an empty hospital, oblivious to the outbreak that has consumed his homeland.Much has been made of the fact that Boyle made the decision to have his zombies run, where traditionally they shambled. Some are better than others, but as one of the few people who liked the film's theatrical ending, I didn't think any of them were that great. Still, the audio offers a pleasing upgrade from the muddy sound package on the DVD, and fans will be happy to hear the improvements.

My guess is that this release was mostly done as a tie-in for the film's sequel, 28 Weeks Later, and less as a tent pole release for the format. The film might be watchable on smaller TVs, but on a 21st century 65-inch TV, it looked awful – DVD or Blu-ray didn’t matter for this mess. The two play off each other, often expanding on each other's comments or using them as a springboard for their next subject.Granted, many movies of this ilk use similar conditions, but most don’t seem quite as predictable as Later. Of course, some violent encounters with “the infected” also occur, though probably not enough to sustain the viewer’s interest. The audio isn't as explosive as much tracks, but near the end it picks up, just as the action does, so the first halve is nessessary to be not as impressive.
