About this deal

An array of flavours, from delicate fruit and raisins, to toasted toffee and chocolate, with an outstanding aftertaste. The Graham’s Master Blender composes this blend from wines put to aside in the cellar by his great-grand-father, his grand-father, his father and his uncles. Vintage ports are aged in barrels for a maximum of 2 years before bottling, and often require another 5 to 15 years of aging in the bottle before reaching what is considered proper drinking age. An array of flavours; from delicate fruit and raisins, to toasted toffee and chocolate, giving an outstanding aftertaste. On the palate, an array of flavours from delicate fruit and raisins to toasted toffee and chocolate with an outstanding after taste.

The Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto (IVDP or Port and Douro Wine Institute) regulates the Port industry in Portugal.Available by the bottle or case, your wine gift will be individually tailored with a personal message, tasting notes and vintage description. This is caused by the addition of distilled grape spirits (such as brandy) to fortify the wine and halt fermentation before all the sugar is converted to alcohol. This 40 Year Old certainly does no disservice to that reputation and shows an amazing intensity and complexity of flavours over a palate where the sweetness, flavour characteristics, tannins, and acidity are in perfect balance. Port became very popular in England after the Methuen Treaty of 1703, when merchants were permitted to import it at a low duty, while war with France deprived English wine drinkers of French wine. Graham's 40 year old tawny port is for those who appreciate the extraordinary, complex and subtle taste of time.

Graham’s 40 Year Old Tawny shows golden amber in colour, with a pale green tinge at the rim, denoting great age. Under the new ownership, the company produced the 1970 Vintage Port, which is considered as one of the best wines of the century, to date. Aged for an average of 40 years in seasoned oak casks, this 40 Year Old Tawny is a testament to time and patience. Particularly fine vintage ports can continue to gain complexity and drink wonderfully for decades after they were bottled, and therefore can be particularly sought after and expensive wines. It is incredibly refined and smooth with an exceptionally long finish, making it a delight just to drink and savour by itself. Instead, it is the result of blending ""ruby"" and ""white"" ports, or possibly the addition of caramel colouring. In the unlikely event that you're not happy with your purchase, for whatever reason, then please do get in touch so that we can make amends. In much the same way as the 20 and 30 Year Old Tawny, the 40 Year Old is a masterclass in the art of blending aged wines but stepped up another notch. It was also one of the first Port house to invest in its own vineyards and is now at the cutting edge of innovation in winemaking techniques.
