About this deal

Finally, cover the soil pipe and seal it using a bag or cloth, to prevent potentially harmful (and very smelly) gasses coming up into your bathroom from the sewers below. This is the least pleasant part of our 'how to remove a toilet' guide.

A low-level toilet has a traditional look to it. This is where the cistern is fitted at a low level to the wall and is connected to the bowl via a pipe. These types of toilet look great in period homes. High-Level Toilet Once the nuts are hand-tight, use a wrench to tighten the 2 nuts alternatingly. It is best to tighten the nuts alternatingly to ensure the toilet is level. If you tighten one side before tightening the other one, the toilet will slant to one side.

What you will need to fit a toilet

A: The components of the toilet, which are located within the cistern, will already be assembled and ready for use once your new toilet has been fitted. Q: How much does it cost to hire a professional to replace a toilet? Once these tasks have been completed, your plumber will be ready to begin the process of installing your new toilet. What’s involved with installing a new toilet? The mounting nuts on your toilet are the fixtures that hold the toilet to your floor in place. You will want to remove these, but if it’s problematic due to the nuts being rusty or old, as mentioned in the previous step, try to use a screwdriver or wrench to help you loosen and unscrew them. This may require some effort on your part as they may have been screwed on years ago and are, therefore, hard to lift out of place. Step 5. Cut Through the Caulk and Pull the Toilet Up It is also an easy task if you have a two-piece toilet and decide to remove the tank and then the bowl. Assuming you have emptied the toilet tank and shut off the water supply, proceed as follows: Hot to Remove the Toilet Tank Replacing a toilet wax ring is not a hard task. The most important thing is to work safely. Most bathrooms are slippery, so the risk of sliding and falling is high.

Once the toilet is completely dry, remove the cistern bolts from underneath the tank and disconnect the water supply line. These should be removed by hand, but you may need to use a wrench for stubborn bolts. Step 5 Your choice of toilet and cistern will have a direct impact on the time it takes to fit them and the overall cost. Your selection of a floor standing or wall-standing toilet or close-coupled or low- or high-level cistern will affect the time it takes to complete the job. Project materials The short answer is, indefinitely. Wax, unlike rubber, doesn’t deteriorate. Unless there’s another problem with the toilet, it won’t spring a leak on its own. People usually replace wax rings when they remove the toilet for some unrelated reason. When reinstalling a toilet, always remove the existing wax ring and replace it with a fresh one. One of the easiest and most common cisterns to install is a close coupled cistern. This cistern sits on top of your close coupled toilet pan and is typically secured by two bolts with square ends. Slot them into fixings either side of the seal on the underside of your cistern or where your instructions suggest. The top of your toilet pan will have a hole (usually in the centre) where the water will pass from the cistern into the pan when you flush it. Place your seal on top of this hole. Now take your cistern and carefully position it over the pan and ensure all the screws line up. Now take your nuts/wingnuts and tighten the screws which hold the cistern to the pan; this can be a fiddly process so try to have some patience! The cistern will need fixing to the wall; although this is purely for keeping the cistern in place and won’t require to much work. If you ever notice your toilet leaking from the base, there is a very big chance that the wax ring is not sealing correctly and will therefore need to be replaced.

To prepare for replacing your toilet, you want to begin by measuring your old toilet. This way, you can be sure that you're buying a new toilet that is going to fit in that same spot. A: If you are low on space for a toilet, the best toilet option would be a corner toilet or a wall hung toilet. Before your new toilet can be fitted, the area will need to be prepared. This includes ensuring the area is ready for the plumber to complete their work. The time it takes to prepare your bathroom can affect the installation cost of your new toilet. If you are looking to minimise the costs of installing a new toilet, you can complete many of these tasks yourself. You may need to plan a toilet installation for several reasons. One of the main reasons why you might want to fit a new toilet is to replace an old one; that either went out of style years ago or has developed a fault. Another reason could be that you’ve moved into a house which hasn’t already got a toilet in the bathroomand you’ll want to know how to install a toilet from scratch. One-piece toilets are made with the toilet bowl and tank fused together. Two-piece toilets are made with the bowl and tank as separate parts and are joined together during installation. Skirted toilets have a concealed trapway and are a little harder to remove.

This job demands care and attention. Most toilets are porcelain and can break easily if they are mistreated. Toilets and cisterns also need to be emptied of water and waste before they are removed, otherwise, this water will leak out; causing damage to paintwork and flooring throughout the house. The number of toilets being installed A toilet wax ring can last for many decades or as long as the toilet will last. Due to varied reasons, however, sometimes it will not work as anticipated and will therefore need to be replaced. These are the telltale signs that your toilet wax ring is bad and a replacement is required. 1. Water pooling around the toilet base A corner toilet is one that is shaped perfectly to fit in a corner. This type of toilet is typically smaller than other types, making it great for fitting into small spaces. Wall Hung Toilet Your cisternwill have a pipe that feeds water to it for when it needs filling up. Use your wrench to undo this pipe and disconnect it from the cistern. A small amount of remaining water may spill out here so it may be a good idea to place a towel underneath the pipe to help catch any drips. Using a different type of toilet or cistern, or moving the position of the toilet within the room will take longer and cost more. Room access

Your toilet should have an isolation valve fitted to it, which enables your plumber to stop water from continuing to be supplied to the toilet. If an isolation valve hasn’t been fitted, the plumber will need to cut off water to your entire property, which is inconvenient and can increase costs. Floor-standing vs wall hung toilets It is recommended that you wear gloves when replacing your toilet to avoid getting any germs or bacteria on your hands. Materials to Replace a Toilet Another advantage of a rubber gasket seal is that it does not deform. That is, however, not the case with a wax ring. Being made from wax makes a toilet wax ring easily deform after slightly applying force. On the toilet outlet, you can see the old toilet wax ring. Slide it out. This can be a little messy. The wax ring’s size depends on the drainpipe’s size, which has a standard size of either 3 or 4 inches. Most wax rings are, therefore, universal. Toilet Wax Ring Alternative

If you want to install a toilet or fit some bathroom tilesafter this removal then clear the area and tidy it up for an easier and more straightforward installation. If you do install tiles, make sure you allow them to set fully before installing the toilet. While buying a new wax ring, you will need to make sure that you buy one which will fit into your toilet. Toilet wax rings are universal, but the size has to be correct. But what is wrong with a wax ring? It has been working for all that time. Why change it then”? One may ask. Since you’ve unscrewed the mounting nuts in the previous step, and you’ve cleaned and cut through the caulk, you’re ready to pull the old toilet up. Lift it up, but be careful, as the toilet body can weigh quite a bit. Step 6. Remove the Old Wax Ring Are you sure the leak is from the pan connector? leaks from the cistern to pan connection (doughnut washer) often end up dripping onto the pan connector. Some people prefer setting the wax ring on top of the flange and installing the toilet on top. The problem with this technique is that you will not be sure if the wax ring will form a good seal since it might shift while installing the toilet. As a starting point, put on your rubber gloves and get ready to begin. Firstly, you need to turn off the water valve and drain the toilet cistern. To do the latter, you’ll need to flush the toilet so that the cistern is empty. There might still be some water left in it, though, so remove the cistern lid and use sponges, cloths or towels to absorb the remaining moisture and water left in it. Once ready, you can proceed to the next step. Step 2. Disconnect the Water Supply
