Starlit Lovers – Lor Phoenix and KitsuneArt’s Touching “Sapphic Slice-of-Life Romance” Debuts at Thought Bubble October 30, 2023 I really enjoyed Wash Day Diaries by Jamila Rowser and Robyn Smith. This was a graphic novel that really shined a light on the day in, day out, trials and tribulations of a group of friends and covered a lot of different topics that women encounter. I loved the multiple perspectives within the same overall storyline. The graphics were great and the story flowed so well, highlighting the strong friendship between the girls. Highly recommend it! Have you ever open a book and knew that you would immediately relate to it. Well this is how I felt as soon as I seen the first illustration of washday diaries 🔥 kim goes about her wash day routine while dealing with routine harassment from an ex and catcalling from men on the street. her story is a good opening to the book, and i love that she finds solace in hanging with cookie, as well as in her ritual of self care.Unconditional love is foregrounded in Wash Day Diaries. The interactions between Nisha, Davene, Kim, and Cookie aren’t used as opportunities to lob passive aggressive nonsense at each other, but rather are consistently genuine attempts to provide love and support. Depicting the friendships as a bulwark against the messiness of the outside world keeps the mood of Wash Day Diaries low key. Whatever is thrown their way—stalkers, a love triangle, a complicated relationship with a grandmother, or struggles with depression—it’s clear that these women have a strong and loving network that will see them through whatever they might face. This was such a lovely read! The four main characters were unique, complex, and super relatable. I was kind of reminded of Sex and the City, four gorgeous and funny women living their best lives, without any of the toxicity. And instead of the City being a character, we move from story to story through a narrative centered on haircare. I wash once or twice every couple of weeks. Last night, I oiled my hair and scalp a bit before bed with argan oil. This morning, I conditioned, washed, and conditioned again with SheaMoisture. Every now and again, I use my girlfriend’s Alaffia Shampoo and Conditioner, which I may formally switch to when my Shea Moisture products run out. I’m still trying to find a daily moisturizer that works for me and it hasn’t been so easy. I struggle with dry scalp and build-up. I also look for something that won’t weigh my hair down because it’s soft and fine. What inspired your most recent hair journey? Jamila Rowser and Robyn Smith follow Toni Morrison’s belief that, “if there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” The award-winning writer-artist duo embody this by creating the stories they want to see and read within comic books. The best thing about this book is the friendships between all four girls; it’s heartwarming and reminded me of my friend group. There’s even talks about mental health that I think were done mostly great, though one characters reaction slightly annoyed me, everything else great.

meanwhile nisha grapples with a developing love triangle in her life, and her bright personality shines through magnetically. her section also has one of the best moments of the book: the group chat that takes place when she's getting her hair braided, where she dishes the drama and her best friends all respond. all of their voices come alive here, even in text format, and it's beautifully done! I can't even formulate words. I read this in one sitting, and from the art to the words to the issues pertaining at hand, I could relate in small bursts. The overlapping beauty of culture, the humor, the seriousness of depressive cycles, the importance of friendship and protecting your own from toxic men; (chefs kiss). This was such a wonderful graphic novel. There are five sections and each section follows a different character in the friend group. Each character was so well constructed and felt real. I also loved the relationships in this friend group. This is a slice of life book that is so beautifully drawn and written. NORD – Martin Simpson’s Norse Epic is a Stunningly Illustrated Tale of Mortality and Lineage October 31, 2023Wash Day Diaries tells the story of Kim, Tanisha, Davene, and Cookie told thought five selections. The four friends share a story of life, unity, community, love, and depression. This was a delight to read as the story touched me in places I have experienced personally and with my friends. The story starts with wash day which for most naturals is a whole story all unto itself (I literally felt the all day nature of wash day and getting my hair braided).
