About this deal

Bath Quays North comprises up to 38,000 sq m of office space, residential uses (at least 70 new homes) and other mixed-use development. Under the new system, Ambury will remain one-way but with the existing buses-only restriction removed, and a new exit onto Ambury from the Avon Street car park has also been created, to replace the current exit onto Green Park Road. Various changes to proposed flood protection works to existing buildings on south river bank and adjacent flood walls. The Bath Quays Waterside project will combine flood mitigation measures with new open spaces for people to enjoy.

A new two-way traffic system around Avon Street car park will go live this month in the latest major milestone for the Bath Quays Waterside flood mitigation scheme. Amendments to the Green Park Road proposals include a change in the Avon Street car park exit location and the location of Corn Street pedestrian crossing. To view and comment upon the planning application, go to: www.bathnes.gov.uk/BathQuaysWatersidePlans. To increase the sense of place and connect people to the river, vehicles were diverted from Green Park road onto a new road and the riverbank was widened, creating a public open space. Flood tolerant wild flowers and ferns have been planted to withstand flood events. Ecological improvements included the planting of 150 trees including fruiting species to attract pollinators, reed rafts in the River Avon, sensitive riverside lighting for bats and other wildlife. The Council is working with the Environment Agency to re-evaluate options inside and outside of the new regeneration areas to ensure flood risk in Bath is managed as effectively as possible. Our role on Bath Quays South involved the submission of a comprehensive application that included an Environmental Statement.

Around 150 trees will be planted as part of the scheme and the area will include a greater diversity of plant species and more fruiting species that will help to attract birds and insects. The trees will be planted at varying stages of maturity, including native species found elsewhere along the river corridor in Bath, such as willow, field maple, alder, birch and lime. An artist’s impression of what the bank will look like when complete.Specialists from our Planning and Economics teams are engaged in work on the redevelopment of Bath Quays. The plans also aim to reduce existing and future flood risk to the Lower Bristol Road and over 100 residential and commercial properties on the South side of the river through the provision of new flood defences. The project would not increase flood risk up or downstream and would not stop other flood alleviation works going ahead elsewhere in the city.
