About this deal

Don’t apply any of the products discussed here to hard surfaces. It will stain the surface an orange rusty colour which will be hard to remove In the case of iron sulphate, it also offers benefits beneath the soil. As it makes your grass healthier, it promotes more vigorous root growth. These roots bind the soil together, creating harder turf that feels more comfortable underfoot and is less likely to be deformed by the weather. This means iron sulphate is a key component of any professional grass maintenance routine, especially on sports pitches and golf courses. Grass usually doesn’t need a large amount of iron. In fact, it’s usually only beneficial to apply extra iron if you have a soil test indicating iron deficiency. Apply iron sulphate cautiously and it can work wonders for your lawn. It will give your lawn a rich green hue, keep pests and mosses at bay and boost your lawn’s health.

Whenever you’re sprinkling powder or granules, it’s best to wait for a windless day; otherwise, your mix can spread into flower beds. The iron sulphate comes in fine granular form, and I’ve always applied it via a spreader for accuracy, but I’ve seen others do so with a gloved hand. However, pets (and humans) shouldn’t eat iron sulphate, so ensure that you store your product correctly. All MOOWY products are supplied in resealable pouches, so just seal it up, and it will remain safe. When is iron sulphate not suitable for a lawn? Ammonium sulphate: Ammonium sulphate moss killers burn the moss. They should be applied during colder days, like early spring or late autumn. Avoid watering after application. If ferrous sulphate is to be sold as a moss killer then the law requires that it is covered by pesticide legislation plus extra health and safety measures just as any pesticide should be. This adds to the cost!

Iron boosts photosynthesis, producing a lawn deep in emerald green and kills off the moss that suffocates the grass’s roots. If you have a blood iron deficiency, speak to your doctor; not your lawn expert! What do you use iron sulfate for? Beautiful green grass – Photo by Daniel Helpiansky on Unsplash When mixing iron sulphate for use it is always best to dissolve in lukewarm water to aid mixing and avoid clumps forming. You can apply sulphate dry as a powder by hand. Obviously this makes it very difficult to calculate the exact mix you are applying. You do not want to apply more than 2 grams per square metre for lawn green up and no more than 5 grams per square metre at any one time. A slightly heaped teaspoon is approximately 5 grams, just like a spoonful of sugar.

This causes the most damage in hot and rainy weather. The only way to revive your burnt grass is to reduce the iron content in the soil. How much iron sulphate per litre? Activate your product by lightly watering your lawn after applying. If there’s light rain forecast, you can wait until the shower – but avoid a day with heavy showers, as it can wash the iron sulphate away from the surface of your lawn. For lawn and grass green-up apply at 0.5 to 1 gram per square metre in solution - 6 applications can be made with 2 or 3 being reasonable In a perfect world, the new grass and the breakdown of this thatch can be in perfect harmony. It’s usually fungi that break down thatch, but if your grass outgrows this process, usually after a feed, then thatch can build up, causing a detrimental effect on your lawn. This enables the manufacturer to advertise the product as a moss killer and give directions for its use to achieve moss control. The concentrations are high enough to kill moss and low enough to cause the grass little or no damage. You will find these commonly sold as: Moss KillerThe Pro-Kleen Premium Iron Sulphate Lawn Tonic/Lawn Conditioner & Moss Killer is another option also used by professional landscapers to keep moss at bay and the grass green. As already mentioned, it’s actually the same product as Ferromel 20 Iron Sulphate PREMIUM Lawn Conditioner, Lawn Feed & Moss Killer, it’s just marketed in a fancy tub by a different brand which is why it’s my Runner-up. Above 500 grams per 100 square metres (over 5g per sq metre)– Repeat applications are likely to over-acidify the soil and may turn the grass yellow or brown.
