As it makes your grass healthier, it promotes more vigorous root growth. These roots bind the soil together, creating harder turf that feels more comfortable underfoot and is less likely to be deformed by the weather. This means iron sulphate is a key component of any professional grass maintenance routine, especially on sports pitches and golf courses. Grass usually doesn’t need a large amount of iron. In fact, it’s usually only beneficial to apply extra iron if you have a soil test indicating iron deficiency. Apply iron sulphate cautiously and it can work wonders for your lawn. Whenever you’re sprinkling powder or granules, it’s best to wait for a windless day; otherwise, your mix can spread into flower beds. However, pets (and humans) shouldn’t eat iron sulphate, so ensure that you store your product correctly. Ammonium sulphate: Ammonium sulphate moss killers burn the moss. They should be applied during colder days, like early spring or late autumn. Avoid watering after application. If ferrous sulphate is to be sold as a moss killer then the law requires that it is covered by pesticide legislation plus extra health and safety measures just as any pesticide should be. This adds to the cost!

You can apply sulphate dry as a powder by hand. Obviously this makes it very difficult to calculate the exact mix you are applying. You do not want to apply more than 2 grams per square metre for lawn green up and no more than 5 grams per square metre at any one time. It’s usually fungi that break down thatch, but if your grass outgrows this process, usually after a feed, then thatch can build up, causing a detrimental effect on your lawn. Above 500 grams per 100 square metres (over 5g per sq metre)– Repeat applications are likely to over-acidify the soil and may turn the grass yellow or brown.
