About this deal

My exhaust bobbins (poly bushing mounts for exhaust hangers) failed on the way home and my exhaust dragging on the freeway was enough to make me pull over and investigate. I pivoted the mounting bracket a little and carefully aligned the exhaust to ensure that the two brackets were exactly parallel, which is alwaya a good idea using the original bobbin too. I was very careful to realign, slot, file, bend, adjust all my mounts to take and stress out of the bobbins as far as possible - ie it looks when installed, nice and straight, not angled between top and bottom, not in shear. The only concern I have is the possibility of the nyloc nut walking off as you can't clamp it down hard, but think this is extremely unlikely. Go to a motor factors like Halfords in the UK (or something similar where you are) and they should be able to supply you with some Mini (old classic Mini) exhaust rubber mounts, cheap as chips and similar to Norton stuff apart from a radiused centre.

I should imagine the only significant movement in the bush is in the roll axis when inertial forces on the mass of the silencer, which is outboard of the mount, cause the whole exhaust system to flex in torsion. Yep as every body has said the very rear should have 2 of those rubber bobbins at the rear with preferably a metal bar bewteen the two that they hang from this metal bar then just screws directly to the subframe! At the engine end, there's a squiggly section of pipe to take it round the gear linkage box thing, but instead of running along the exhaust channel in the chassis, it kind of hangs underneath it, which is no good.

I checked to make sure that the holes in the exhaust and the chassis bracket are large enough to allow the bolt to pivot through a large angle, ensuring that the load is always on the rubber spacers rather than being a shear load on the bolt. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item.

I'm not worried about the lack of centre support - with the cat fitted I've actually stood in it the centre (and I'm quite large! or rather, the usual once in a while glance over the whole car showed it to be perishing, so I swopped it.I'd worry that polyurethane wouldn't have enough 'give' in it and would strain the exhaust but the machine mount links look good. Arrived in Eureka, MT with exhaust out of the Mini's sun roof and sounding like a biker gang on the prowl. The imperial size may have been true at one point but many motor factors now supply these with a metric thread and nuts to suit (certainly Halfords does). I'm guessing it needs another mount in the middle of the car, and probably the rear one replaced, but what parts will this involve, and will simply remounting and clamping up sort it? Also, having the header or downpipe secured to the differential; having the subframe remounted with solid items on anything newer than MK III cars, and having the engine securely mounted are crucial to mini exhaust longevity.

Ok ive found this as well not using the rubber bobbin setup that you have but uses the fixed set up for the rear mount! whilst a neat execution, the question in my mind is why are the majority of car exhausts suspended on rubber rather than having through bolts? The very rear bobbin type mounting rubber on every Mini made until the introduction of a rubber hanger strap in 1992. A belted hanger for a Ford 3/4 ton pickup truck was cut to length and used at the front of the rear subframe. So, I'd like to get this sorted, I've no problem with taking it to a Mini-friendly garage if necessary, as it's probably a bit beyond my capabilities to sort it myself.

I used a nyloc nut and inserted the bolt from above so it wouldn't tend to fall out even if the nut came off. Moz's comment about rubber products sounds familiar - I changed the steering rack gaiters for boxed and branded QH ones last year and they're already starting to go at the edge. I know I could get a bracket welded to the silencer extending forward but I think it would look mess and I prefer the clean lines of the system as it is.I checked this before assembling as I wanted to ensure that over the likely range of movement in use the load would be borne by the rubber and not by the bolt "locking" in the holes, which would have imparted large bending loads. PS: I was told off at my initial inspection because the steering rack bolts were upside down and failed dangerous. i got the arches from huddersfield spares, they recommended them to go with my 6x12 revs and the rubber strip came with them. there should be two rubber bobbins on the rear mount of the exhaust and mid join looks like its just a threaded bar welded to the box.
