About this deal

My man, Dan McClellan, who is the scripture translation supervisor for the LDS Church, recommended most of these.

If you engage me on the basis of conversion I will not indulge you, but whether you are religious or not and wish to discuss and challenge any of my thoughts, please feel free. What I liked: The historical essays leading off each book, section and Athens are simply outstanding.

Of course, the Fourth Edition retains the features prized by students, including single column annotations at the foot of the pages, in-text charts, and maps, a page number-keyed index of all the study materials in the volume, and Oxford's renowned Bible maps. The essays are written for the general reader, not for specialists, and as such they make available to anyone who's interested not only the most recent scholarship but (again, just as importantly) the methods scholars have used and use to arrive at their conclusions. These essays are both substantial enough in themselves and of sufficient quantity to warrant separate publication in their own right as a collection.Color maps give readers the geographical orientation theyneed for understanding historical accounts throughout the Bible. Then halfway through they just introduce a new protagonist out of nowhere who dies within 4 chapters and they spend the rest of the book trying to work out what his deal was. From reviews of the previous edition: "The New Oxford Annotated Bible with its excellent footnotes and concise introductory materials has a thoroughness and clarity that should prove invaluable to the lay reader and scholar alike. A volume that users will want to keep for continued reference, The New Oxford Annotated Bible continues the Oxford UniversityPress tradition of providing excellence in scholarship for the general reader. The amount of violence is horrific, and is often treated by the narrative as a good thing, when when it happens to the ’right people’.

I am no expert on translating but I understand that NRSV is leans more towards the literal side of the continuum than the interpretive perhaps explaining the "thicker" text. Because the work focuses only on the King James version, it has some limitations when arguing with people who use other translations, but those can usually be worked out by reading the given verses in a different translation at a site like Bible Gateway.

The characters are two dimensional, the plot is all over the place and the author can't keep his story straight.Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. The premier study Bible used by scholars, pastors, undergraduate and graduate students, The New Oxford Annotated Bible offers a vast range of information, including extensive notes by experts in their fields; in-text maps, charts, and diagrams; supplementary essays on translation, biblical interpretation, cultural and historical background, and other general topics. well, a myth, and that the divinely mandated genocide of the Hebrew Bible and the condemnation of most of earth's population to everlasting hellfire of the Christian one is no less than sick and deranged, although in their defence this bashing is made necessary by literalist nonsense. I bought this for the broad minded ecumenical approach of the study elements, the essays etc rather than the specific translation. Annotations in a single column across the page bottom, paragraphed according to their boldface topical headings.
