About this deal

actually works, I won’t further elongate this review by repeating the nuts and bolts of gameplay; you can learn all about its movement, shooting, fighting, list building, and more in our comprehensive Kill Team: Octarius guide. Missions and Narrative Campaigns are now a real and proper thing, and form the heart of the newest edition of Kill Team. Still, setting the unfortunate rules changes aside and focusing solely on this release, this is a near-flawless box. If you don’t feel like reading everything below, I’ve stuck a tl;dr at the bottom in nice big letters so you can’t miss it.

Have a look at the various figures available and decide which you’d fancy building your Kill Team out of. One of my favourite things to do as a hobbyist is to look at people’s heavily converted and individualised Kill Teams, and that is being taken away from players – at least for the time being. I managed to get this built up and painted to a battle ready standard in a day (due to needing this stuff together and painted in time for this review! Underneath the divider lies the rest of the box: the books, the build guide, the sheet of tokens, your transfers, the cards, dice, bases, and game board. GW’s reasons are its own, but it’s hard not to feel that all this could have been fit into one book – easing the burden on players new and old – without harming revenue too much.Along side these there are two identical sets of cards with two different coloured backings – these are used to generate a bank of secondary objectives that are then drawn at the start of each game. What’s more, this launch will be followed up by major releases every quarter, including new models, killzones, and settings, and you may even see detailed rules for other factions elsewhere.

As you take turns doing this your pool of dice will shrink as the fight goes on, so seeing an opponent with lots of hits you may decide to simply use your single hit to do some damage, or instead if you re badly wounded you might use your hits to reduce the damage coming into you.It comes with 23 miniatures that make up two versatile kill teams – the Ork Kommandos and the Veteran Guardsmen – as well as enough terrain to build a whole Ork scrap town. page Kill Team 3rd Edition Core Book: Learn your way around the brand new Kill Team with this tome of clear, concise rules for matched play, open play, and narrative play missions. Still, after a couple of games, minor assembly niggles fade into insignificance – and the book-passing faff ceases to be a real concern, as you’ll have memorised most of the key bits and bobs for both Kill Teams by then. The three main ways to play – Open Play, Matched Play, and Narrative Play (in the form of the new Spec Ops campaign mode) – are, blessedly, presented very clearly with their individual characteristics, play instructions, and scenarios to try out. Ork aesthetic demands everything be big, chunky, and have lots of sticky-out parts, so the scenery sprues are both some of the largest and heaviest currently available.

However, the new era of Kill Team that the box heralds includes many changes to the way the game works that will leave many fans feeling hard done by. Even once I had it done as according to the guide, and after some fiddling, the support column still wasn’t quite touching the ground. All of which, to me, makes the question of how to approach Kill Team 2nd Edition something of a no-brainer, for a new player at least: if you can get hold of Octarius, and you’re tempted by the new edition, go for it. Alongside the rules, you'll find pages packed with lore introducing the dark and gritty world of Kill Team and insight into both the Collecting and Gaming sides of the hobby. Citadel Miniatures: Two full kill teams of Veteran Guardsmen and Ork Kommandos form the heart of Kill Team: Octarius, each featuring a wide array of customisation and alternate assembly options. The alternating activations move quickly and fluidly, and the Strategic and Tactical Ploys, as a mini version of 40k’s much more expansive sets of stratagems, offer just enough extra in-game levers to pull, without cluttering up Kill Team’s more energetic, moment-to-moment turn-taking. Sanguinius faced Fulgrim and won, Dorn charged Horus Ascended…and soon regretted it whilst Sigismund took not one, but two heads (Eidolon and Abaddon). Whilst the Death Korps of Krieg has never looked better, and the Ork Kommandos are just downright incredible, I can’t escape the feeling that everyone else has been somewhat left out in the cold.

The smaller pieces of scatter terrain are the same ones first seen in Speedfreeks – but they still stand up today and look great alongside these new terrain pieces! This means that if you are suffering from heavy casualties and are heavily outnumbered it could be that your entire force manages to dig in and fire some desperate overwatch as a valiant last stand, which is an interesting balancing mechanic. So out of the box you get 18 missions to play and 2 army lists, presumably with more missions and army lists to follow in future. As a massive fan of the Death Korps of Krieg, I couldn’t wait to get these guys built and painting as soon as possible and I have to say they are absolutely outstanding models.

That effectively means that, Octarius aside, for existing Warhammer collectors and players, this edition of Kill Team is twice as expensive to start as its predecessor was in 2018.
