About this deal

Not content to have his young hero battling all kinds of evil, he makes sure that the reader truly believes in the world he has created.

The actual line is "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" ‒ "It is sweet and honorable to die for one's country. There's no sparkling here - just an action-packed race against time, from Victorian London to 1920s New York, from the Russian wilderness to the tiny island of Lindisfarne, where the most evil creature on the planet lies in wait. Jamie Carpenter now has to train new recruit, while Kate Randall together with Paul Turner forms ISAT (Internal Security Affairs Team) to make sure that such a disaster like Valeri's attack never happens again. His father is dead, his mother is missing, and he was just rescued by an enormous man named Frankenstein. It was weak at best, why not just hide Jamie and his wife away after he killed whatever-her-name-was? That's an automatic fail for me--I need to give a shit about this person I'm supposed to be rooting for.

I knew that there would be fights, but I didn’t expect them to be shown with such detail and relish. Of course, many of these scenes involve Jamie, Frank et al battling against the evil vampiric hordes, but thanks to the imagination of the author they have a lot more than wooden stakes in their armoury. They were just like humans in the sense that they all made personal decisions about their behavior and how they lived, but they all housed a barely controlled hunger deep inside. If you're looking for help with a personal book recommendation, consult our Weekly Recommendation Thread, Suggested Reading page, or ask in r/suggestmeabook. A lot of YA urban fantasy has been published over the last couple of years, but almost none of it that would appeal to guys. His debut novel was Department 19, the first in a five book series which was a bestseller in the UK and translated into more than a dozen languages. It's real life, and it's messy, and it's complicated, and I'm scared, and I just don't know what to—“I liked that he made mistakes—although it was a little odd that he was so good at fighting after only a couple days of training. Department 19 is an extremely entertaining book that’s not even my normal type of read, but I do have to say that I got carried away with this fast paced, full on gore adventure. From this one question we find ourselves joining the dots and the only conclusion we can come to is that if it wasn't fiction then the only possible alternative is that his much loved story is in fact an account of a real life battle between good and evil. These are certainly not the insipid, vacuous blood suckers that we have had to endure in recent years - Will Hill has drawn on the nastiest examples of these creatures to create his monsters for his inspiration, and in doing so has reclaimed the vampire from the girly, fawning Twilight brigade. Matt Browning is working to find a cure for vampirism and Larissa Kinley is on a secondment in NS9, the Amerian counterpart to Blacklight. Violence and paranoia spread around the globe and, when it finally comes, Dracula's opening move is more vicious than anyone could have imagined. I can just imagine the excitement Will Hill must have felt as his synapses started firing as he answered every subsequent question that arose, making connection after connection and thereby coming up with the idea for the secret branch of the government that is Department 19.
