Several rules referenced by these missions don’t apply to the new edition, but that’s not a problem – the Boarding Actions Core Rules clarify how to handle these situations. For example, Actions no longer exist in Warhammer 40,000, so the new rules explain how to perform and complete any Actions required by your Boarding Action missions. If your Arks of Omen Detachment is a TRAITORIS ASTARTES Detachment that only contains units from the EMPEROR’S CHILDREN Legion, you can include one LEGIONES DAEMONICA Patrol Detachment that only contains units with the SLAANESH keyword as an Allied Detachment.

No more than half the total number of units in a players army can be Strategic Reserve and/or Reinforcement units, and the combined points value of all Strategic Reserve and Reinforcement units (including those embarked within TRANSPORT models that are Strategic Reserve and/or Reinforcement units) must be less than half of the total points value of a players army, even if every unit in that army has an ability that would allow them to be set up elsewhere. A space hulk is an immense amalgamation of stellar debris, starships, and other detritus that have fused together after having been collected together in the warp over the course of millennia. These vessels are at a scale that’s difficult to fathom, potentially hundreds of miles long and consisting of vessels that can be older than the Imperium itself. When the vagaries of the warp unleash them into realspace, they often are infested with all manner of horrors and monstrosities that have been corrupted from exposure to the raw energies of the warp. Others may be filled with Orks hell bent on turning the hulk into the vehicle for their next great WAAAGH!, or Genestealers patiently waiting centuries for the opportunity to descend upon an unsuspecting world and form a psychic beacon to draw the Great Devourer. In the hands of Vashtorr and Abaddon, they are purged of a significant amount of their taint and reborn into Arks of Omen. Players familiar with Warhammer 40k will find new restrictions forcing them to adapt their tactics and army composition in Boarding Actions. For a start, there will be no models with the Vehicle or Monster keywords allowed, making this very much a game for infantry units. If your Arks of Omen Detachment is a THOUSAND SONS Detachment, you can include one LEGIONES DAEMONICA Patrol Detachment that only contains units with the TZEENTCH keyword as an Allied Detachment. Now, this is a giant change! Instead of doing all the other stuff, you just take basically whatever you want as long as you have an HQ and three of anything else (other than flyers). This is really interesting, and we’ll have to see how it changes games. The Arks of Omen have sown terror and death from one side of the galaxy to the other. Despite the efforts of those who opposed them, their masters have gathered enough arcane artefacts for Vashtorr the Arkifane to fashion his monstrous Key. The hour draws nigh when the daemon and the Despoiler will between them awaken this engine of terrible power. Bolster Barricades (Action): One or more IMPERIAL FISTS CORE INFANTRY units from your army can start to perform this action at the end of your Movement phase. Each unit that does so must be within range of an objective marker you control that has not been barricaded by your army (see below). The action is completed at the start of your next Command phase or at the end of the battle (whichever comes first), provided the unit performing it is still within range of the same objective marker. If completed, that objective marker is said to have been barricaded by your army. New rules to spice up competitive play is always great too! Hopefully, this can help keep the game open to creativity with tons of viable options. All The Chapter Approved 2023 Arks of Omens 40k Rules Updates, Points Changes, Missions, & Secondary ObjectivesWhen GW first announced Arks of Omen, it said that a key design goal was to prevent players from having to use more than one book – that means there will be no new Arks of Omen models. But each book will have a strong theme, and some new special characters are confirmed to be releasingalongside the books.

Primaris Kevin: As cool as the concepts and mission are, Arks of Omen really doesn’t appeal to me that much. I already have plenty of Sector Mechanicus and Zone Mortalis terrain for Necromunda, and I have no interest in Kill Team. That means that I would be buying Arks of Omen and the boarding terrain board exclusively for highly limited 500 point battles, and to be honest I don’t see a lot of interest in my local community for learning another set of rules when it’s much easier to just drop down 1000 points and use the Open War system for a casual game of 40k. This seems like something that would have been better off being sold as a boxed game, with cardboard terrain pieces that already contained the layout with 3-D door elements similar to how GW did the original Necromunda boxed set or the Rogue Trader Kill Team box. Retrieve Data (Action): One INFANTRY or BIKER unit from your army can start to perform this action at the end of your Movement phase if it is wholly within a table quarter that has not had a servo-skull retrieved by your army (see below) and it is more than 6" away from any other table quarter. This action is completed at the end of your turn provided the unit performing it is still within the same table quarter. If completed, roll one D6, subtracting 1 from the result if the unit that completed the action has the Troops Battlefield Role: if the result is less than or equal to the number of models currently in that unit, that table quarter is said to have had a servo-skull retrieved by your army and you add 1 to your Retrieved Data tally.

New Objectives

This is all a real shame because I honestly believe in this format, which has snappier play and refines actions into something that fixes their major issues. If Games Workshop made a version of this that used a 44×30″ board and came with non-Gallowdark terrain and allowed say, a single vehicle or something similar, I think they’d be able to create an exceptional introductory version of the game in a way that has eluded them before now. I like Boarding Actions, enough that I’m going to play more, but I’m also immediately thinking about how to make it work with Zone Mortalis terrain. I’m also concerned with how long it’ll get support, since this seems exactly like the kind of thing we get right before a new edition to pad out a release schedule. The new Boarding Actions Core Rules replace the original ones found in Arks of Omen: Abaddon , adapting the new core rules of Warhammer 40,000 to frantic shipboard battles. However, they’re designed to work with the missions – and mission sequences – presented in all five Arks of Omen books,* giving you dozens of missions and a variety of game modes to play through right from the start. Second, if the unit’s minimum size is five then you can either use it as a minimum size unit or include additional models so long as the Starting Strength of the unit is 10. Note that for the most part, 10-model units are then split into Boarding Squads of five models before deployment. On the whole, these are solid. There’s a lot of options here and some really cool narrative concepts for play here, such as the furnace and the explosive decompression of Hull Breach. This truncated list really helps keep Boarding Actions games light when it comes to mental load and also helps prevent some of the more degenerate mechanics and combos that might otherwise destabilize the game from rearing their heads here.
