About this deal

Ask any beauty editor what their ride-or-die product is for clear, dewy skin, and they'll give it to you straight: liquid exfoliants. I'm talking alpha or beta hydroxy acids (think: glycolic, lactic, or salicylic) that help treat everything from acne to fine lines and dark spots. But even though they're known as the gentler alternative to physical exfoliants (aka those gritty-ass face scrubs you used in high school), they can still be pretty harsh on highly-sensitive skin. And that's why the somewhat under-the-radar acid that's trending right now is the gentle giant known as polyhydroxy acid (PHA). But that’s not the case with PHAs. You can comfortably layer your retinol with PHAs. They’re very unlikely to irritate your skin as they stay mostly on the surface of the skin and work in a slow and steady manner. Apply your retinol first! Use them as peels. Malic Acid (derived from apples and other fruits): Malic acid is a gentle AHA that helps to reduce dull, rough skin and discoloration. They have moisturizing properties and can improve skin barrier function, which makes them appealing to those with dry, sensitive skin. Green, B. A., Yu, R. J., & Van Scott, E. J. (2009). Clinical and cosmeceutical uses of hydroxyacids. Clinics in dermatology, 27(5), 495–501. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.clindermatol.2009.06.023

Polyhydroxy acids are taking the stage as daily exfoliators thanks to their strength in removing old surface-level skin. Not as deep as other acids, PHAs are a better daily driver and more adaptable to most people’s routines. For those of you looking for more freedom in your skincare regimen or if you’re sensitive to other acids, this one is for you. Because they’re less acidic than other exfoliating acids, PHAs can be used by anyone, and they’re found in different formulations, whether you’re an emulsion, cleanser, or toner fan. IS GLYCOLIC ACID TONER VEGAN?Yes! This product contains no animal derivatives and is now certified by The Vegan Society. Glycolic Acid (derived from sugar cane): The most common AHA, glycolic acid, is a chemical exfoliant that increases collagen production for firmer-looking skin with a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.Extremely sensitive skins should start low on Crystal Retinal 1 (0.01% retinal), with Crystal Retinal 3 (0.03%) best for sensitive skins or for those nervous about using retinal. Most people can start on Crystal Retinal 6 (0.06%) and gradually move up to Crystal Retinal 10 (0.1%) & 20 (0.2%) for clinical-strength results. RETINAL VS RETINOL Retinol is two conversion steps away from active retinoid ‘retinoic acid’, whereas retinal is just one step away. So you get faster, elevated results. The Inkey List is quite transparent when it comes to product benefits, instructions, and ingredients. They display their dedication to helping customers through the askINKEY forum. Does The Inkey List Have a Subscription Option? This skincare acid also has antibacterial properties, which can be helpful for those with acne-prone skin.

Lactic acid also helps to remove melanin (pigment) from the top layers of your skin for a brighter, more even complexion and a reduction in the look of hyperpigmentation, age spots, and uneven skin tone. Mandelic Acid Given their chemical composition and gentle exfoliating effects, virtually anyone can use PHAs for a brighter, clearer, and more youthful complexion. According to the aforementioned 2004 review, “PHAs have been found to be compatible with clinically sensitive skin, including rosacea and atopic dermatitis [(eczema)], and can be used after cosmetic procedures.” Furthermore, this hydroxy acid can benefit those with sensitive, blemish-prone skin, helping to clear breakouts and eliminate buildup without aggravating your complexion. Even if you use an AHA toner throughout the spring, summer, and fall, swapping for a gentler PHA might be wise in the winter, when dryness and irritation are more prevalent.

WHAT WE RECOMMEND WITH THIS...

I have been using this retinol serum consistently for the past year and I have had great results! From the get go, this serum has never irritated me or caused any discomfort. I found it also to be quite hydrating and overall a nice gentle retinol serum,” one Cult Beauty reviewer wrote.

Galactose: This PHA may sound familiar to you — that's because it's the sugar found in milk. This one is a bit less common than the other two, but it works to exfoliate your skin just as gently. If you have combination skin that leans dry but still produces an oily T-zone, BHA would be your best bet. Between puberty, periods, pregnancy and menopause, there isn’t really a time when, as women, we’re not going through hormonal change. Then there are on-going health conditions, like endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (or PCOS), which can wreak havoc on our hormones for years. As Pamela Marshall, clinical aesthetician and co-founder of the Mortar & Milk Treatment Clinic, puts it, “Women are in a hormonal shit storm for most of their lives.” She’s not wrong, and these hormonal changes are taking a toll on our skin.

Pharmacy product

You can start by using it only on the oily T-zone to help control oil production. Try a gentle exfoliating AHA on the rest of your face. Oily Skin This results in a brighter, more even complexion and a reduction in the look of hyperpigmentation and dark spots. Lactic Acid In addition to those with sensitive skin, PHAs have also been found to be suitable for people who suffer from rosacea and atopic dermatitis. Gluconolactone and Lactobionic Acid DOES THE PHA TONER CAUSE SUN SENSITIVITY?It doesn‘t cause sun sensitivity due to PHAs antioxidant and humectant properties. This is why every skin type can enjoy our PHA toner, even the sensitive ones. We always recommend using an SPF as the last stage of your AM routine to protect against potential damage. Lactic acid offers anti-aging benefits as it reduces the look of lines and wrinkles, smoothes skin texture, and improves radiance.
