About this deal

The Wolseley’s bodywork and wheels appeared to be in immaculate condition and its engine was running smoothly with only a mild escape of exhaust fumes from the rear. He is a man who is troubled ( and driven to alcoholism) by a tragic past and who tries to take a “scientific” attitude towards the paranormal as a way of repressing his own deep-seated fears about it.

In 2010, he was made the Grand Master of Horror by the World Horror Convention and was also awarded an OBE by the Queen for services to literature. But, although I remembered some fragments of the ending and the fact that it was very different to the other James Herbert novels I’d read, I couldn’t remember a huge amount about it. of the way through - I know exactly where this is going - I love this particular twist when done well.Meet the cynical paranormal investigator David Ash in James Herbert’s Haunted, the first chilling novel in the David Ash trilogy. The story is a little weak but is worth indulging if you want to read/listen to the longer books in the trilogy. It was only when the bones of the first devoured victims were discovered that the true nature and power of these swarming black creatures with their razor sharp teeth and the taste for human blood began to be realized by a panic-stricken city.

There's moments of excellence and moments that have dated badly, generally this is a very strong story. I would give this book seven stars if i could, gripping ,blood chilling, everything you would want from a ghost story found within this short but also brilliant work of art. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages. It had some chilling moments but I never found it downright terrifying, which is what I was expecting.

I hadn't read a James Herbert book for over 20 years, so it was good to immerse myself once again back in his world of horror and the supernatural. First time author which was recommended to me wow what a read I absolutely loved it, as a medium myself it’s very true that spirits always know things that we don’t, the book also reminded me of what I do for a living which is solving cold cases using spirits.

This theme of ageing is also used to explore how people only really develop a sense of empathy as they mature and grow older. Much later, the author wrote two more novels with David as the central character, so that they form a trilogy. It was a model he hadn’t seen in many a year, and only then in magazine features on popular old cars. While listening, I thought two things, it must have been written in the 70's and that it was written for a movie. At its heart, it is a novel about people who are haunted by traumatic memories and feelings of guilt.
