About this deal

The Tauren pedal nails the classic emulation of a saught after low-to-medium gain overdrive guitar pedal at a great price. You’re welcome to grab a glass of water, take a sip, and read that over again so you can spit out your water dramatically. Or you can just do that Chris Farley Folgers crystals thing where you're furious, you're flipping tables, making a scene. That works, too.

There are dozens of musicians’ forums about Klones, rather than pasting them all here we’ll just defer to Google… they are pretty good at it! And if you like the sound of the Klon you may want to look also at this list of Dumble Style Overdrives, the second most hyped clone pedals these days.Another strong addition is the Wampler Tumnus Klon clone. I would highly suggest this pedal if the size is of concern. In terms of a well made USA produced pedal, the Chellee is hard to beat. It nails the tones of the Klon and also adds a little bit extra in there. Since all the pedals listed nail or come very close to the Klon sound, how does one go about choosing? I wish I could answer this question, but it's really about what pedals you already have and how you see a Klon clone integrating in this context. Is it simply a case of want or need, and do you believe one of the above pedals will drive you closer to the sound options you're after. This pedal is called the Golden Horse Overdrive. The Golden Horse is a well-made pedal for the price and compares very favorably to the “Clone Centaur,” which is no longer in production. Much like the Clone Centaur, the top end has been slightly attenuated, giving you a slightly warmer/darker sound than the original. There is still plenty of top-end available in this pedal, so no need to worry about that. Build quality wise the Golden Horse has a well-constructed case and potentiometers. There’s nothing to complain about with the TTone Golden Horse. For the price, it will be considered by many the best value for money Klone out there. 5. The Joyo Tauren R-01 This is the best affordable USA Made pedal. If I had to recommend one boutique Klon on this list, it would be the Chellee Ponyboy. This takes the Klon effect in a slightly different direction. Finding budget pedals that are well-made, creative, and unique can be a challenge, but in this article I'm going to show you one of my favorite budget lines that are currently being produced.

Tumnus nails the original Klon tone with great accuracy. This is interesting, given that it employs surface-mount silicon diodes in lieu of germanium. Clearly, you could argue that it's a further refutation of claims that rare diodes are essential for Klon-like tones. Again, I refer you to the second part of the relevant clips in the Gain Control playlist, where diode color is most evident. Even here, the two sounds are almost indistinguishable. A popular Klone with a toggle switch that controls the amount of headroom and character of the drive, and an extra Bass knob for added versatility. Both EQ knobs allow 15dB of boost or cut. Mk3 keeps the same tone and look but adds 18v internal voltage for extra headroom, better input protection, optimized power delivery network, reduced noise floor, and quieter true-bypass switching. I also put together a detailed post regarding my 10 Best EHX pedals here. The Soul Food, even with the build quality issues, still made a list. Being that Bill Finnegan is no longer producing the Klon Centaur or Klon KTR, it is not hard to rationalize finding a quality Klon Clone replacement.

Customer reviews

Almost identical to the original silver version, this pedal is said to emulate the Gold Klon (probably a myth, since the circuit was identical to the Silver version). offering a slightly warmer and more compressed sound than the silver Archer at lower gain settings. It uses Germanium diodes instead of Silicon. You can hear a comparison video here. The Conspiracy Theory's voice is ever so slightly warmer/darker than that of the original Klon, with just a hair more low-mid weight under 500 Hz or so. I still gave this pedal a maximum tone score, because the differences are extremely subtle, and some players will probably prefer the Conspiracy Theory's slightly warmer character—if they notice it at all. The Verdict An evolution of the Klon that adds flexibility with a three-way clipping toggle and a full 3-band active EQ. Within a few years, the pedal gained legendary status, also because of the maker’s dedication to customer service, and to hand-wiring every unit that left their shop. Finnegan stopped building the original model in 2009 – at that point, he had hand-wired 5,400 of them. (You can find a more comprehensive history of the Klon here.)

This other Wampler Klon clone is an evolution of the original Tumnus (see “Authentic “Klones” list) in a bigger enclosure, with optional true bypass switch and tonal flexibility through a three-way EQ section. A toggle switch in the middle of the pedal gives you higher gain options for extra flexibility. A Klon-inspired overdrive with a broader gain range and an extra Bass knob that’s particularly effective in fattening up or thinning down the overdriven tone.

Featuring the classic Klon 3-knob layout and Germanium clipping diodes, this is an authentic-sounding, quality pedal offering higher headroom and dynamic response thanks to an integrated charge pump delivering higher internal voltage rails. A version of the popular Archer with six graphic EQ sliders instead of a tone knob, developed by guitarist Steve Stevens. Each slider controls 18dB of cut or boost at 6 different frequencies.
