It is well written, which I would expect from Felix Francis, and, perhaps, it is his break away from his father’s style of book from which, I thought, he has been moving away successfully. I’m so disappointed that I didn’t have time to read Iced by Felix Francis in time for this blog tour, but am thrilled that Felix has agreed to stay in with me to chat all about it today. In St Moritz he is pressured by a chance encounter with his old trainer into helping out with two horses entered in the annual White Turf horse racing festival held on the frozen snow-covered lake – even though he swore he would never again go near a meet.

How he managed to get his weight down if too heavy, in steam rooms for too long and depriving himself of eating, to be nearly unable to walk to be seated on the horse.Starting out as a young jockey is tough, a competitive world then there is rivalry with some who believe he is only where he is because of who his father was. Felix seems to be more interested in updating the heroes, giving them current mental issues and learning disabilities, making them more human. Felix Francis has done a very nice job continuing his father’s horse-themed mysteries, and if you only read the blurb on its webpage, Iced seems to be just another one of these.

For over forty years, the London University grad helped father Dick Francis (31 Oct 1920 – 14 Feb 2010), ex-jockey known for horse-racing mysteries. Moritz, and the speed and joy felt on the ice chute back through the obsession with horses and the career development of a steeplechase jockey.

The saddest part is as they lose confidence in themselves they are used by others who have power over them.

While there is no pro- or epilogue statement about the need to seek professional help and addiction recovery organizations, the wisdom of those courses of action is apparent in the tale. The formula requires a crime based mystery to be introduced at the start, a fast action plot and a very direct and easy to follow writing style. Miles is no longer a jockey, he has been going to Switzerland every year for 7 years to take part in the Cresta run, which entails hurling himself on a toboggan, head first, down a three quarter mile long Swiss ice chute reaching speeds of up to 80 miles an hour.
