About this deal

EcoStyle’s renewable energy kits have been used in an ‘Education for Renewable Energy’ project for schools in Abuja, Nigeria. Irish Aid provided funding for over twenty of EcoStyle’s wind turbine kits, photovoltaic kits and solar water heater kits. Paul Harper, Programme Director for Engineering Design at the University of Bristol, said: ‘I started using the EcoStyle Renewable Energy Kits as a teaching aid for university undergraduates ten years ago, and they have always been tremendously valuable. I have been hugely grateful for Simon’s support over the years, and it has been great to see the continuous development and expansion of the EcoStyle product range.’ The judges said: 'They have not jumped onto the environmental bandwagon - they have been driving it, combining local manufacturing with a global vision to make a big difference.' EcoStyle beat off competition from hundreds of companies across the region to make the finals, and took top honours in two of the ten categories: the Business Innovation Award 2010, sponsored by the University of Bedfordshire's Knowledge Hub, and the Environmental Responsibility Award 2010, sponsored by Lloyds TSB Commercial. Amy explained: ‘Over the past two years, I worked on a group project at the University of Bristol to develop a STEM competition where participants compete to produce as much energy as possible using renewables. Working with EcoStyle, we developed a working prototype that allowed their solar panel and wind turbine to store energy, which could be used to power a small electric vehicle.’

In response to the climate crisis, countries in the region recognise the need to diversify away from reliance on oil, and to adopt renewable energy. There is also a strong desire to invest in training and education. Living With Water asked EcoStyle for a model that shows ways in which residents can take simple actions to mitigate surface water damage and to bring the benefits of sustainable drainage to life.EcoStyle, in conjunction with Frazer-Nash Consultancy, has recently supported a two-year Engineering Design course at the University of Bristol. Speaking on Nigeria’s Africa Independent Television (AIT) news channel, Ronan Mullin, the Deputy Head Mission of the Irish Embassy in Nigeria, said ‘There’s a whole industry here that’s waiting to be developed, and I think that these students and these presentations are a really good example’. The project culminated in an awards presentation for participating schools.Over the past three years we have engaged with over 6,000 residents, using the SuDS Model at community events, scout groups and schools to educate around the risk of flooding we face in Hull and East Riding. Y lo mejor de todo, The idea for Eco Style came when Angela, our founder, was on holiday in Greece visiting family. A walk along the beach with her young daughter one morning showed her the amount of plastic that had been washed up and she began to think about what these wasted materials could become. EcoStyle’s Managing Director Simon Hall said: ‘I have really enjoyed taking part in Bike Month, and it has motivated me to continue cycling into work. As an environmental organisation, cycling to work is an initiative we are keen to support. We’ll be looking at ways of increasing staff participation, including providing bicycles for our team.’ EcoStyle’s managing director Simon Hall, together with his two colleagues Clémence Lecomte and Diane Rochon received their awards from Anglia TV presenter Susie Fowler-Watts.
