Yet two decades later came a proper, non-ironic addition to the genre that made the sex/death connection truly overt. In It Follows, a murderous slow-marching demon is set upon the population of Detroit suburbia. The twist is that the demon is only after one person at any given time, and the victim-in-waiting is able to save themselves only by having it off with someone else, thereby passing on the curse. Minato and Juunichi's relationship in Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka is seen as this by everyone despite the siblings' insistence that it's not. It turns out everyone else was spot on, because when the show ends, Minato is the one who ends up winning. Dokkoida deliberately plays with this trope since Suzuo's Mission Controller, Tampopo, disguises herself as his sister, Kosuzu, to blend into Earth society. The eighth episode in particular parodies this trope to the point of full-fledged Deconstruction: seeing a soap opera using this trope makes all of the Pretty Freeloaders in the apartment the characters live in worry about Kosuzu/Tampopo's relationship with Suzuo—including Kosuzu. Suzuo doesn't notice a thing, and manages to restore the status quo with a Dunno What's Going On, But... speech at the end. Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai - Whether or not siblings Kirino and Kyosuke do or don't have a sexual attraction/hidden desire to each other is the Elephant in the Living Room of the series. Their child, Prayer, is eventually born... but not through normal means. Takeshi and Elle fuse their bodies, and Prayer is born when they split apart again.
If the twist such a plot gives to the film noir's traditions is obvious, the execution is elegant and subtle, with Gina Gershon as Corky offering a peppering of whip-smart irony that might be expected from the recent star of Showgirls (another film whose teasing critique of American culture has only come to be appreciated with time). In hindsight it’s perhaps unsurprising that the Wachowskis – then Andy and Larry, now Lilly and Lana – were both able and willing to subvert the Hollywood orthodoxy regarding gender and sexuality. Erotic but not exploitative, progressive but not moralising, pulpy but not cheap, the film trod a number of tightropes masterfully. And in employing a specialist consultant to help choreograph the sex scenes – now common industry practice in the post-Weinstein era – Bound was ahead of its time in more ways than one. Izaya's younger twin sisters Kururi and Mairu are also Twincestuously close to each other. In the anime it comes rather out of left field when they make their only proper appearance in the series in a DVD-only episode, and suddenly make out without any kind of foreshadowing, only for it to be never mentioned again. In Maze Megaburst Space, not only is the central couple a pair of blood siblings, and not only is the central plot their successful and unrepentant plot to be together, but it goes even beyond that... In D.Gray-man, Komui's attitude toward his sister Lenalee straddles the line between Big Brother Instinct and this trope; even the other characters find it a little creepy and frequently remark on his obsession.The idea of theatre and performance is returned to again and again, making the point that both our main characters – each switching between personas throughout – are constantly putting on a show, forced into doing so by the repressive social strictures they exist within. Like those in Blue is the Warmest Colour, The Handmaiden’s love scenes divided viewers for being unabashedly erotic depictions of lesbian sex as viewed through the lens of a straight man.

The Wachowski siblings’ directorial debut tells the story of Corky, a charismatic ex-con who begin an affair with the wife of a mafia money-launderer and together the pair hatch a plan to make off with a big bag of the abusive husband's cash. In Shoujo Sect, one of the early hentai scenes is between sisters. Momoko gets upset that she (unwittingly) and Shinobu (less so) helped set this up. The amusing thing is that if she hadn't said so, we wouldn't have known they were sisters, what with all the Onee-Sama-ing that goes on at all-girl schools. Their sharing a last name is also kind of a clue, though admittedly that detail might be easy to miss. Ryo from Final Approach is quite obsessive over his little sister Akane and she's generally reciprocative. It's generally played for laughs as nothing more than an amusingly intense sister/brother complex, but it is worth noting that Akane insisted on taking part in the contest with the other girls to see who got to play the role of Ryo's bride. Certainly its belated reputation as a British classic is largely because it is seen to be a film about cinema itself. And it’s not hard to see why: it’s about a killer who poses as a documentary maker, using the allure of his job to murder women with a knife hidden in his tripod (those with an eye for symbolism needn’t look far). But it is also a film about depraved sexuality, with the killer – played by Carl Boehm not as a terrifying maniac but as a softly spoken wounded-animal type – fixating obscenely on his self-shot footage of women facing death. And his warped urges are in turn tied up in the idea of observing: when his neighbour Helen kisses him, he bizarrely kisses the lens of his camera. The scene has many detractors including the actresses themselves, who famously rounded on their director: Seydoux said making it was "horrible" and she would "never" work with Kechiche again. Once the film began sweeping up during the 2013 awards season, however, they recanted and said that they were "happy" with it. And yet, look at the scene now, within the movie, and away from the hype, and it doesn't play too well. It's crudely lit. It's brazen, and yet also crass. And what it says, in its many nipple shots, arse close-ups, and vaginal teases, is that perhaps all sex scenes, no matter how well-intended, or how groundbreaking and profound, are inherently, well, kind of sleazy.

The anime-remade episode has this too, and is more outrageous, where Megumi goes to the length of clinging onto Keichii and fighting over him with Skuld, Urd and Peorth who also fell victim to the effect of the potion. In the 20 years since, trans characters have garnered one more Oscar win (Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club) and two more nominations (Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl and Felicity Huffman for Transamerica), while Yance Ford became the first transgender filmmaker nominated in 2018. Progress, slow as it may be, is afoot.To Love Ru seems to heading this way, if Momo gets her way. Played for laughs when Mikan trying to resist the effects of Celine's pollen. And, for some irony, the one guy who's the exception, the one guy who can touch her because he treats her with dignity and compassion? He was attracted to her initially due to her resemblance to his big sister, and and given they share genetic implants tied to said sister that give Satellizer a genetic resemblance, they are an indirect example of this trope as well, except Kazuya Aoi (the guy, whose lost sister was named Kazuha) is a far, far better choice for Satellizer by far. Miyuki Takamachi in Triangle Heart 3 ～sweet songs forever～ is actually Kyoya's cousin, but adopted as his sister. In the game she's an option, though in Canon he chooses to be with his Patient Childhood Love Interest, Shinobu. Yes, this shows up in early episodes Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha; watch as Kyoya states he's going to visit Shinobu. For one second she shows jealousy, and then it's never mentioned again. Candy Boy's main theme is the yuri subtext between (fraternal) twin sisters. The lyrics in the recap video appended to the first episode proclaim that "this may be the best pairing in the history of the world". Ahem. Interestingly enough, the level of incest between Minato and Juunichi changes depending on the version of the story. They're fully blood-related in the original PC game, but Minato is adopted in the Play Station 2 version and possibly in the anime as well.
