About this deal

The author wrote themselves into such a corner that they could only use an apocalypse as a possible ending for it. Yes, this book goes so inanely into the pits of hell that it requires an apocalypse as a possible solution. I saw a comment on Youtube that perfectly summarized how bad this went, "Because of a decision made in the last book, the world goes to shit and is running straight into the apocalypse, but then humans decide to nuke everything, but the rapture comes before that can happen".

This series is at its best when Ava and Luc are working closely together, with high threat levels, racing against time to prevent the next major crime, and this book delivers.Having read books by Helen Fields before, I knew what to expect and certainly wasn’t disappointed. If you haven’t read any of Helen’s books then you are missing out and this is as good a one to start with as any, although if you don’t like to jump into a character or characters who have appeared in previous titles, missing out on some of their life stories then start from her first books and work up to this one. I thoroughly enjoyed One for Sorrow, which is a tense, difficult read full of twists and turns. The novel is mostly told from Ava’s point of view with Luc’s added at strategic moments and is intercut with the story of a young woman, Quinn, and her difficult relationship. The most popular form of this poem is seven lines long. These lines are quite short, mostly only three words, or forwards, long. The seventh line of the song is the longest, stretching to eight words. The lines rhyme: ABCBDEE. Book 7 (!) and I’m utterly hooked. During this series, Helen Fields has crafted not just some amazing plots but some really loveable characters that I for one, look forward to reading about in each book. Technically, Ava and Luc are two characters that you shouldn’t adore. They’re just too perfect! Even their flaws make them endearing. But the way in which Helen writes them makes them inexplicably engaging. I had a massive ‘whoop whoop’ moment on the arrival of Connie Woolwine! Then they made a deal with insects to say they will never ever eat insects again if they contaminate carcasses. That's all of the insects made peace with via Tomar the owl. What are the birds eating now then? Why is this their doomsday solution?

Rich and strange (and kitted out with an eye-catching cover), but stronger in the set pieces than the internal logic. Oh my this is an high octane of a book! From the get go it set a heart racing pace, a nail biting narrative and a true triumph for Helen! This is the 7th book in the DI Callanish series but you could definitely read it as a standalone. I have a wee confession that although I own all the previous books in the series I haven't read them all and I had no problem following the threads from the previous outings. However, this is a mistake that I am going to rectify! Annie Browne has just moved to a new town with her mother and father. She's a bit timid and she's nervous about making friends at her new school, the Pearce Academy for Girls. The first girl she meets is Elsie, and Elsie doesn't waste any time filling her in on how horrible the girls at Pearce are. None of the girls like Elsie and she convinces Annie that they won't like her either. Every day, Annie can't seem to get away from Elsie as she's consistently holding her hand and inviting herself over to her house. She tells everyone that Annie is her best friend and because of this, nobody else wants anything to do with Annie. They begin making fun of her too and Annie becomes miserable. Elsie is bossy, pushy, and just not fun to be around. Annie can't even seem to convince her parents that there's something not right about Elsie. She has to find away to get away from her. The 1918 Spanish Flu broke out and took Elsie's life. She became a ghost and haunted Annie and made her life a living hell. But Annie isn't given a choice by Elsie, who the minute she saw the new comer, decided they were going to be best friends.A second story of Quinn is going on which seemed unconnected in the beginning but Helen Fields made a connection.
