About this deal

Maybe it's because the visuals are cleaner, but the sound seems to be even more impactful in all three movies. As stated there are still a few minor flaws that pull the score down from being perfect, but if this had been the standard applied to all three films (or, more importantly, applied to Fellowship first time around) then I doubt there would have been any complaints. How much/what is shown in these extended scenes and do they add, or detract to the Peter Jackson showcase of LOTR?

the struggles of creating the worlds for final chapter is under scrutiny, with the main new addition for the film being Minas Tirith. Each of the movies is more than 3 hours long, and considering the very high quality of picture and audio, they had to divide it to two DVD's, with the other two DVD's dedicated to appendices containing many superb extras. The fact that the material has been repurposed makes it no less fascinating or necessary to a complete understanding of the films. Frodo Baggins, despite being the obvious focal point of the story, isn't all that fleshed out, and he certainly isn't as prominent or in the middle of danger to the same degree he finds himself with each concurrent entry in the saga.

When he leaves the shire on his 111 th birthday, he leaves the ring to Frodo (Wood), but Gandalf (McKellen) thinks there’s something odd about it. Now back when the theatrical edition Blu-ray was being promoted – just prior to release – there was a big ‘net hubbub about how these were going to be remastered transfers. But in finally seeing the sequence, it's easy to see why it was excised; though it caps off two characters who were prominent in the last film, their fates don't really advance the plot that much and the movie already has too much to cover before the battle for Minis Tirith. Each extended edition features scenes which do not appear in the corresponding theatrical edition, as well as scenes which are simply expanded upon.

If you prefer those over the extra-long extended editions, you might want to hold on to your previous set. Most of the commentarians have graced the previous sets — the lineups are nearly identical — giving a sense of continuity to the supplements.War led to the defeat of Sauron, though the greed, treachery, and lust for power of mankind prevented its destruction, and soon after, it was lost for over two thousand years. It’s still shy of perfect, which is really the way in which all of these films should have been presented, but you have to take into account the fact that Jackson only ever made 2K HD masters, and that – despite 2K being a decent standard – there are still inherent limitations with the format (hence why we now have 4K renditions).
