About this deal

Small diameter abrasive wheels or points are available for sanding internal mouldings, the face grooves on MDF doors for instance. These wheels can be mounted on a CNC machine or on a custom made internal sander running at speeds up to 3000 rpm. They effectively sand the sides of the profile leaving the base to be finished by hand sanding. Even on a flat surface, the flat pad with a high grit paper will give you an excellent finish, eliminating any swirl marks left by your random orbital sander. Performance Companies with only basic machining facilities can achieve good finishes on MDF edges provided sufficient sanding is carried out to remove any machining marks.

If you are working with steel wool, it might take a lot of time because there are long grooves on the beadboard, and you don’t want to make so much effort that may result in health issues as well. We recommend using Mirlon Total for intermediate sanding of painted surfaces since it is more flexible and compliant. The more profiles, the greater benefit you will have by using Mirlon Total. The most coarse grit available in 360 grit.It uses a true linear motion, so it properly imitates hand sanding. Obviously, when you get off of flat materials and wrap around round material or get in and sand a rabbet, random orbit sanding is no longer an option. We’ll get into more detail on that momentarily. A firm sanding head suitable for general sanding. Replacement abrasives can be simply clipped in place making it economical to use.

While many woodworkers dread the sanding part of a project, especially the hand-sanding part, we actually enjoy it. There is a meditative quality to sanding, stopping from time to time to feel the surfaces, taking note of the areas where more attention is needed. Wipe down the surface with a wet rag or sponge. This raises the grain, making the wood more receptive to the oil. The sanding wheels can be shaped to the required profile by running them against a high density hardwood strip cut to the desired profile with saw cuts spaced at approximately 20 mm intervals along the length. The prepared moulding is pressed forcefully against the rotating wheel, across successive saw cuts, until the negative profile has been completely ground into the edge of the wheel. Sample hardwood profiled mouldings should be retained from each production batch for shaping wheels required for future production. Fine grit (80-120) are for bringing a nice smooth finish to an already relatively smooth surface, can increase the sheen and will remove abrasion marks from medium grit sandpaper - great for preparing a surface for finishes.

Tools Required

Use a flexible sanding solution. You need to use a sanding approach that allows you to gently follow the contours of your project, getting into tight places and following the profile of the piece. George will demonstrate his preferred solution which he has used successfully for decades. An electric sander is excellent for making light work of the flat parts of the door, but it might not be the best option for tight corners, edges or intricate detailing, so it makes sense to mix it up and use both to get the best finish you can. When refinishing a door in poor condition with several layers of old, chipped paint, start with a coarse paper and follow up with medium then fine, or the following combination of grits works well, 60, then 100, followed by 150. The cleaner and fairer a saw cut is to begin with, the less time you’ll have to spend smoothing it, so learn to saw effectively. Regardless of whether you use a bandsaw, jigsaw, or scrollsaw to make a cut, keep a few key factors in mind:

You might ask, “why?” Well, we generally use traditional sandpapers or sanders for sanding. But since groove spots are narrow, these tools may not cover these places efficiently. Coarse grit (40-50) are great for rapidly removing material to shape wood, or to rough up a surface in preparation for gluing. Automatic sequence of operation after clamping, i.e. as the swing arm is moved, rotation starts. After sanding, as arm is retracted, rotation stops and clamp opens. Start hand sanding with either Goldflex Soft P150-P320 grit or Mirlon® Total VF 360 strips to remove imperfections in the surface. The worse the surface, the coarser the abrasive grit starting point must be. If the surface is in better shape, we recommend you start with a finer grit.

If you are leaving the door on its hinges, you need to prop it open with a doorstop to prevent it from moving while you work. For MDF, the use of our special ST Wheels gives simultanious sanding and sealing, so that when sprayed, virtually no denibbing is required. For solid wood our San-Dit heads provide accurate profile sanding.
