About this deal

The government’s response to their protests – imprisonment, force-feeding – has wrought physical and psychological damage in some cases. The prose is evocative and the author has vividly captured the essence of a particular location through her story. It was this education that gave Mattie and Florrie the background to instruct the girls – and they thought such education should be available to all classes of girls, they should all learn to think and be critical.

Infants (aged 8 days to 23 months inclusive) travelling with Ryanair must be accompanied by an adult aged 16 or over (one infant per adult). Perfectly timed for the centenary of the women’s vote in 2018, Old Baggage takes a unique approach to the lives of the women who fought so hard to win us the vote. This was very much a novel dealing with heavy concepts, but doing so through a lens of rich characters so that it felt very readable. some of the bolder girls would whisper, as Mattie sounded off about Mussolini, or dogs with docked tails, or vegetarians. Other items of baby equipment (max weight 20kg), in addition to the 2 free items, can be checked in for a fee. Immediately, memories come flooding back to Mattie—memories of a thrilling past, which only further serve to remind her of her chafingly uneventful present.

The story also subtly shows how political ideas influence people and reverberate over the greater span of time. And for something a little bit stronger, try a Palo Cortado dry sherry – a delectable alternative to whisky – or a cheeky canned negroni.Mattie Simpkin and The Flea were militant suffragettes but now they and most of their compatriots are rather adrift. Mattie becomes, over and over again, a caregiver in her life, and while this may be realistic to some degree, I felt the character deserved more. And that the old baggage actually isn’t carrying her old baggage terribly well, leading to the crisis point in the story. Old Baggage didn’t charm me as much as it did several bloggers whose opinions I’ve come to value over the years. The quiet drama in the story is the way that Mattie gets led astray, not so much from her cause as from her bedrock straightforward way of going about it.

If one were cross about something, then one should simply say so; conversation should not be a guessing game.

She survived jail, police beatings and force-feeding buoyed by the camaraderie of her fellow suffragettes. Now that her third and last child has left the nest, Edie Boyd's life turns suddenly and uncomfortably silent.

But Mattie has never given up the fight, and ten years later she is still on the lecture circuit, attempting to enlist a new generation of women into the cause. So it’s a difficult thing to make readers feel the heat of that anger while not making them want to close themselves off to the reality of it, but this is something Evans does very well. She’s undeniably the centre of the novel and she’s such a mesmerising figure she deserves to be the focus. Mattie misses the camaraderie of her fellow fighters, as well as the found family aspect of the cause, while also afraid that the young generation of women aren't prepared to fight for what they should have. Florrie understands Mattie’s moods and is able to exercise a restraining influence on her wilder schemes, schemes that, as with early motor cars, often require ‘someone to precede her with a red flag’.

A chance discovery leads to a daring plan of action, which risks being scuppered by the other kind of old baggage – the emotional sort. It all starts to go wrong when a rival group emerges, led by a fellow former suffragette who has developed a leaning to Fascism. I thought the dramatic turning point in the narrative took too long to materialise and the fall out was rushed. Social work was new at the end of the 19th century, and although there might be elements of ‘Lady Bountiful’, it was developing as a profession.
