Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 ART review: best Canon R5 video lens? Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 ART review: best Canon R5 video lens?

is an affordable lens with fantastic “Sigma Art” image quality, sharpness, and performance when shooting video on the Canon EOS R5. DC HSM is attractive, significantly undercutting the purchase of several equivalent prime lenses, whilst offering excellent image quality and the convenience of a zoom. We've selected a group of cameras that are easy to keep with you, and that can adapt to take photos wherever and whenever something memorable happens. Family moments are precious and sometimes you want to capture that time spent with loved ones or friends in better quality than your phone can manage. This will make it so much easier shooting in darker environments where you do not want or can use flash lighting, for example in churches or at different sports venues. I'd have liked to see it on a D7100, to see if the better AF on the Nikon would have helped its performance. Admittedly I was trying to test focus using the viewfinder, and maybe it might be better in liveview, but frankly taking photos in live view isn't that great on the 70d because of the slow recycle times. Despite Sigma giving us a list of ways in which this sample's build may not match up to final production standards, it still feels very nicely put together, with both the focus and zoom rings giving a smooth, positive feel.

the Sigma 18-35mm opens up opportunities to shoot in low-light situations, something that was previously only possible with fast aperture prime lenses. Crop” video is higher quality than regular 4K, which is what you get when 4K HQ mode and Movie Cropping are both set to “Disable” (see below). These capable cameras should be solid and well-built, have both the speed and focus to capture fast action and offer professional-level image quality. The graphs indicate a little green/magenta fringing at wideangle, and moderately strong blue/yellow fringing in the middle of the range (note though that this tends to be visually less intrusive).

Occasionally, I would extend my hand at a close distance, force the lens to acquire focus, then refocus on the subject. Utilizing the center focus point and using the focus and recompose technique in low-light and high-contrast situations seemed to yield better results. In terms of aesthetics, the Sigma 18-35mm looks fantastic; its matte black paintwork teamed with silver and white detailing resembles that of a ‘Stealth fighter’ jet and it just oozes high build quality. The success of this lens has allowed Sigma to greenlight a somewhat similar full frame lens, although that lens (a 24-35mm f/2) has a smaller zoom range, a slightly smaller aperture, and is a bit heavier (+130g). While the aperture value of prime lenses is superior to zoom lenses, their field of view is always the same, and therefore it was always necessary to carry many fixed focal length lenses.

At the same time, its long barrel actually makes it easier to balance it out on lightweight camera bodies when it is hand-held. AI Servo did better on the mid shots, bringing most into focus, but the long shots were more randomly softer.

In the field the biggest plus-points were the ability to take pictures in low-light conditions and the eye-catching nature of the close-range pictures that could be created…Unless something truly incredible is waiting around the corner, Sigma’s 18-35mm f/1. Our sophisticated products have satisfied professionals and lovers of photography all over the world, because our manufacturing is based on genuine craftsmanship, underpinned by the passion and pride of our experts. The 18-35mm is a fairly heavy lens for such a small body (it'd be happier on a 60D, 7D, D7000 or D7100 with their more substantial grips), but concentrating on supporting the lens, rather than the body, meant it wasn't a problem, even with the Rebel's comparatively small grip. lenses, for instance, have proved to be really impressive, with no need for caveats about them being from a third-party lens maker.

Apart from a slight increase in sharpness, the Sigma can even boast lower levels of chromatic aberration. I have now reviewed lenses from all three categories of Sigma’s Global Strategy (Art, Sport, and Contemporary), and despite still not having a clue what “Contemporary” is supposed to mean in this context, I can attest that the cosmetic design and general construction of all of these lenses is excellent. Maybe I'll give it another shot in the future if the problem is fixed, but for now, it sucks being the guinea pig. There's visible barrel distortion at wideangle, turning to pincushion distortion at the long end, but no more than you'd get from any other premium standard zoom.Shooting photos in Live view (where the auto-focus works great) is only good for occasional family photos. Introduction As with the 35mm prime, this new model is one of the firm’s new Art series lenses challenging Canon’s L-series and the similar ED lenses from Nikon for optical quality. The lens performed very well during and after the shoot, autofocus continued to function without any problems, and both zoom and focus rings operated smoothly without getting stuck. Along with landscapes, portraits, still-life, close-up and casual snaps, they are perfect for the kind of photography that unleashes the inner artist.
