About this deal

The Princess – a Dutch brand – was the first air cooler I tried, in the middle of 2022’s heatwave when all the big-beast proper air conditioners were sold out. It was a bit of a revelation, reducing the temperature in my bedroom from an entirely unreasonable 23 degrees (at midnight!) to a more bearable 19. In fact, that is probably the ideal use, because it’s heavy enough to pose a problem getting up and down stairs if used at home, as well as taking up a lot of space and making a fairly industrial noise. You wouldn’t choose it for cooling your bedroom at night, but it’s the only one we reviewed that can stand a chance of cooling a 40 square-metre space.

That being said, complaints about the water tank are the most common issue with this model. The opening to manually add water to the tank (rather than using a hose) is small and makes it awkward to fill without spilling water. It’s also harder to add ice in bulk, which is something that many people do to enhance the cooling effect of an evaporative cooler. Most people are happy to work around those shortcomings, though, because of this model’s reputation for reliable, efficient cooling power. The roof's foundation will need to be sturdy, with access to a water supply nearby,” adds Wiseman. Even still, whole-house evaporative coolers are generally considered to have minimal installation requirements when compared to a central air system. On the subject of the fan, it should be noted that Bonaire uses an axial fan rather than the more typical belt-driven squirrel cage blower, also known as a centrifugal fan. Depending on the type of ductwork you have, the Bonaire Durango Roof Top Evaporative Cooler will produce a different or louder noise than an evaporative cooler with a centrifugal fan. There are mixed opinions on which one is better, but it’s worth noting that many people do find Bonaire’s axial fan to be less noticeable, and it’s rated to operate at 64 decibels. Most importantly, the majority of users in high-heat, low-humidity conditions find that this model is more than capable of maintaining cool temperatures on hot summer days. Ice Compartment Choose models with an added ice compartment to add ice for faster cooling when needed.Evaporative Air Coolers should not be used in enclosed spaces. Doors and windows should be opened to allow free airflow. An air cooler works best when placed near an open window, drawing in outside air and circulating it in the room before exiting via a window or door. The maximum cooling effect is felt when a person is near the flow of air coming out of the air cooler. Correct! Honeywell Evaporative Air Coolers don't rely on heavy compressors or refrigerant gas to lower air temperatures, nor do they spray mist. Instead, portable air coolers moderately reduce heat through evaporating water vapor into the air. Honeywell Air Coolers work most effectively in hot, dry climates. Much like a breeze flowing across a lake or the refreshing cool air you feel near a waterfall, Honeywell Evaporative Air Coolers release a comfortable, cool breeze with the natural process of water evaporation. When warm air is drawn into the air cooler, the air is filtered through a wet honeycomb cooling medium, which absorbs heat and naturally cools and humidifies the air. How do evaporative air coolers work? The Hessaire MC61V Portable Evaporative Cooler offers plenty of air movement, more evaporation surface, and a portable design. In combination, these features make this a great option as an evaporative cooler for most spaces, including porches, patios, garages, and some ventilated indoor living areas. The Chillmax is one of the most searched-for air coolers, but that may have more to do with JML’s hard-sell TV advertising than its cooling ability – which, to be honest, is fairly minimal. At a mere 7.5 Watts, it’s less than one twentieth as powerful as the Symphony air cooler above and could more accurately be described as a vaporiser, projecting a cloud of somewhat cool mist for about a metre. Because evaporative coolers rely on water or ice instead of a motor, they are simpler to maintain, use and move around, but they don't produce as much cold air as a portable AC does. Some can be hooked up directly to a hose or water source for continuous use, while others have a tank that must be manually refilled. They're a great solution for dorm rooms, outdoor areas like porches or sunrooms, garages and other smaller spaces.

Part of this model’s success is due to the fact that it includes three media panels. While some swamp coolers may only include one or two media panels, the Hessaire MC61V houses a trio of high-density XeL50 media, which increase the evaporation surface compared to conventional media. More panels and evaporation surface means that there is more wet surface area to cool the air passing through the evaporative cooler. It also lowers static pressure inside the unit, improving efficiency. The 14.6-gallon water tank is large enough to keep the unit running for up to 4 hours, but it also includes a continuous fill feature if you’re using this evaporative cooler outside with access to a garden hose. There is often confusion about the difference between an evaporative air cooler versus a classic fan and a window or split air conditioner.

When put to the test, this Honeywell Portable Evaporative Air Cooler earned high marks with our Lab experts. It earned the title of Best Portable Air Cooler Without a Hose in our roundup of the best portable air conditioners (even though it's actually an evaporative cooler and not a portable AC). This compact unit quietly cools rooms up to 426 sq. ft., a major perk compared to the noisy rumble that often comes from true portable ACs. Quiet operation is one of the major upsides of evaporative coolers. As of July 1 2023, the government’s Energy Price Guarantee caps the per unit costs at 30p per kiloWatt-hour for electricity, so that a 100W appliance costs roughly 3p per hour to run. We’ve used this as our guide to air cooler running costs, although they may be lower depending on your tariff. The Symphony has the largest water tank we tested, which doesn’t translate into more power – it just means it lasts longer (two days and nights, in this case). But as it happens, the Symphony is powerful, too, with an airflow of 840 cubic metres per hour that allows it to cool rooms up to 12m 2. That’s a bigger space than many air coolers – although still not huge. No air cooler can chill a big living room. For that you will need a proper air conditioner.
