Clearly, it makes much more financial sense to choose an Android phone but, if money’s no object and your heart is set on Apple’s latest flagship, then there is no doubt you’ll be pleased with the iPhone 11 Pro Max.In testing, it absolutely lives up to that; in fact, my measurements put it at 1,292cd/m², which is even brighter than Apple’s claims. The results are pretty good, especially when you're snapping people in well-lit, contrasting scenes - in fact, get such shots right and the images can be stunning. It features True Tone technology to better match the ambient lighting conditions (altering the white balance depending on the lighting situation you’re in) as well as a fluid screen – although not quite as fluid as the higher refresh rates we’ve seen on the iPad Pro, for instance. Night mode kicks in when ambient lighting is poor, ensuring that images are brighter and detail rich. It allows you to shoot large groups of people indoors and capture far more striking landscapes outdoors than you would with a regular smartphone camera.

The results were sometimes staggering - the levels of sharpness and brightness the iPhone can achieve using Night mode have to be seen to be believed. Inside, it’s powered by Apple’s latest A13 Bionic chip, boosting performance to the highest level we’ve ever seen. Last, but by no means least, Apple has also given the front-facing selfie camera a major upgrade, boosting resolution from 7-megapixels last time to 12-megapixels this time around. There were also occasions where scrolling through a downloaded film to get to a particular scene froze the footage, which was annoying when we were trying to find a brighter scene to test the quality of the display. The ultra-wide camera isn’t a huge innovation – other manufacturers have had this as an option on their flagship phones for a while now – but there’s no doubt it’s a very nice extra to have.
