About this deal

I’ve never seen ‘The Fallen Idol’ (1948) until now, despite it being on my watch-list for a while, and in some ways I’m glad I waited. Elsewhere, Nick Ross (long-time presenter of the BBC’s Crimewatch UK, 1984-present) has sought to differentiate ‘public interest’ shows such as Crimewatch – which invite viewers to help solve crimes – from exploitative ‘true crime’ television, asserting that ‘ Crimewatch and its sister programmes are in the public interest. Representations of true crimes have a long cultural heritage, finding their earliest expression in ‘early street literature (ballads and broadsides), collections like the Newgate Calendar, nineteenth-century Penny Dreadfuls and the popular tabloids of today’ (Cameron, quoted in Rowe, 1992: 97). Surely, I thought, Mother would never have sent those cables unless there was some very real crisis. I had the honour and pleasure of meeting Bobby (now Robert) Henrey when he came over to England from his present home in Connecticut in September, 2013, to launch his autobiography, "Through Grown-Up Eyes: Living With Childhood Fame" and we got on famously together and we had photos taken of us shaking hands, ect, and all I can say is that I was a big fan before I met him and an even bigger one after I met him.

This was a series of dramatisations of real life historic murder mysteries introduced and narrated by the late great Edward Woodward.Guests stars include Amanda Holden, Dudley Sutton, Sue Johnston, Larry Lamb, Philip Glenister and many more.

Watched last night or the night before, TPTV's recent screening of film Live Now Pay Later (the cast including Ian Hendry and Geoffrey Keen, with an early career appearance by Peter Bowles). So if you’re already a fan of the film and are reading this review to assess whether it’s worth picking this particular edition up, then job done. Presented by the great Edward Woodward, each episode dramatizes true stories centered around real life murders. This new breed of programmes focused less on the punishment dished out to the criminals and more on the spectacle of the crime itself.I think TPTV posted on their Facebook page recently (in response to a question about the programme) that there were five series in total of In Suspicious Circumstances.

Will get round to posting a list of each edition with the titles of the stories, as well as the copyright shown at the end of the end credits. We use cookies to give you the best possible experience on our site, provide personalised content and advertising, analyse our traffic, and ensure you see more of what you love. The channel's repeat run of the second series of The Saint finishes a week on Sunday (11th December), going straight into the third series on Sunday 18th December in the usual 6 pm - 7 pm timeslot. Have had another look at the episode guide on the IMDb, and I'm thinking the airdates don't seem right. Mother didn't believe in growing older and her quality had never changed, not even the inimitable was- it-Swiss, was-it-Balkan?

The transfers for the first two episodes of In Suspicious Circumstances weren't too bad (one bit with Edward Woodward in the second episode looked a bit bleached (sunlight in that location being bright, or a faded image with a rough-looking transfer, was how it looked to me). Nevertheless, as a narrative account of crimes in the Twentieth Century – some of which have been largely forgotten – the series exerts a strong, albeit sometimes ghoulish, fascination. Don't know if this is the start of a repeat run of the whole series, but airing on New Year's Eve (Saturday 31st December) at 8 pm - 10.Yes, they've done a good job on this, my favourite film, although there are still a few seconds here and there of thin vertical scratches that they have overlooked. The Edgar Award–winning author of the Peter Duluth series delivers a fun, fast-paced murder mystery set in the heyday of Hollywood.
