About this deal

The frame is lightweight and the whole bike weighs just 5.5 pounds so it’s easy for kids to maneuver. It’s also got a special feature for parents, an integrated carry handle built right into the frame, for those walks home after a long (or frustrating!) ride.

Being at a place at the beginning or the end of the day, in rain or sunshine, summer or winter, a good or a bad mood, influences how you perceive a place or a moment. Older Mongoose bikes made through the 1980’s had pretty easy serial numbers. Generally the year and month of build was stamped as the first part of the serial number. For example my 1986 Mongoose Expert has a serial number M6EG0652. The first number (6) relates to the year – 1986. The next letter relates to the month (E) is May based on the convention January (A), February (B), March (C), April (D), May (E), June (F), July (G), August (H), September (I), October (J), November (K), December (L). It is assumed that the G0652 is the production number. There were a few variations on this type of serial number, but usually they were pretty easy to work out. Frames are sized in centimetres, inches or T-shirt style (such as the ‘L’ frame pictured here). Simon Bromley / Immediate Media The upper limit is restricted by weight rather than age. Seats are typically rated for passengers weighing up to around 20kg (44lb). The Green Commute Initiative is a social enterprise that is focused on getting more people out of cars and onto bikes. A number of bikes are built in a Retro style, but with modern components. Dutch bikes, trendy coffee cruisers, and beach cruisers may be modern but appear to be 1950s styling. These tend to have modern rims and brakes as a giveaway.

Anyway, the rest is now history. We finally broke the previous world e-bike record in Portugal in late January and are now in Cyprus with 20,622kms on the odometer. We finally set a new world e-bike long distance record in Portugal in January If you don’t have a car, and you have a baby, you’re going to have to ride. Parents in Europe–and all over the world for that matter–do it; so should we. Mid-school Mongoose BMX bikes built through most of the 90’s have a serial number that begins with 4 letters. The 3rd letter corresponds to the year of manufacture. A B C D E F G H IAt Halfords, we also take pride in our range of kids bikes . And because they're designed with little hands and feet in mind, most of our bikes feature stabilisers which can be removed once your son or daughter learns how to cycle. Be aware of what else might reach the spokes – items such as scarfs, mittens on strings, and long laces – and make sure they can’t. The skirt guard that’s fitted to Dutch roadsters is a useful extra barrier.

After that? Well, that is still a secret! You will have to stay tuned to find out the answer to that one.

Whether you choose a front or rear seat is a personal preference, Chris Juden, who was a senior technical officer and engineer for Cycling UK, explains his personal view in his blog on front child seats. Fitting with a child seat on your bike Component manufacturers have steadily increased the number of cassette cogs at the rear. At times, they needed to change the freehub body and/or free hub spline pattern to accommodate things. Thus, the number of speeds the freehub can support can provide some information on the wheels' date of manufacture. This can be a proxy for the frame’s age. But note that A road frame with 130mm rear spacing could have been manufactured in the early 1990s, but it could conceivably accept wheels made in 2021.

If your kiddo is going to be riding on mixed terrain including dirt, gravel, or uneven pavement, make sure to invest in a bike that has pneumatic (air) tires. They get superior traction when compared to plastic or foam tires. Toy vs Bike Balance bikes don’t all come with brakes, and Swegle says they are not necessary: “Your feet, flat to the ground, provide your forward and stopping power.” But as a child gets older, “learning how to coordinate the brake levers is important, so that they can master the coordination between their feet and hands,” he says. “Plus, it is important to learn how much pressure to apply adequately and safely stop.”But Take Note: This starter bike is small and may not be suitable for taller kids in the recommended age category. The Cycle to Work scheme is catered for by many different providers, with some employers signed up to specific schemes, limiting which ones are available to you.
