About this deal

It can even be set to show a red light - something that can be paired with the all-new 'Red Shift Mode' that changes the display to shades of red to aid readability in darker conditions. Suitable for activities: running; cycling; fitness; golf; yoga; camp; skiing; multisport; outdoors; swimming; triathlon; hiking With the Epix Pro not really trying to be a smartwatch filled with apps and widgets, we won't grade it too harshly in this regard. Basically, it just does enough to get by.

Ranger is a very sleek analog face if you prefer to focus on the time and keep the step counts and heart rate readings well out of sight. It places the Epix Pro just below what you can expect from the Forerunner 965, which is a little disappointing considering the price difference and similarity in what's on offer, but we still rate it as having a very solid battery life.As with all of Garmin's mid-cycle updates, the Epix Pro 2 looks pretty identical to the Epix 2, though there are a few key differences to be aware of.

Garmin Epix Pro (Gen 2) Review | Trusted Reviews

If you spend a lot of time outdoors exploring, this is the kind of free face to have loaded up onto your Garmin. So, if you can't stomach the price of Garmin's ultrarunner-friendly Enduro, you can still get one of its best faces. The high price stings too, but there’s so much longevity in a product like this that it’s unlikely you’d need to upgrade for years. Garmin’s platform logs everything and shows your trends and key performance information, such as VO2 Max, so you can measure your improvements over time. Equally, if you own a first-generation Epix Pro, there’s not a lot here to convince you to upgrade.Ever size the Apple Watch Ultra announcement, where the Cupertino-based brand clarified the 36-hour battery life of the Ultra, Garmin never misses an opportunity to say they "measure battery life in days, not hours." You can also mix up the colors if you don't want to go with the yellow-themed one we've featured. You'll need to give it access to GPS location and sensors if you want to pull in information like weather, heart rate, and elevation.

One for mindfulness fans - or anyone that needs to take a breather after a stressful moment in their day - the CalmGuru face uses breath circles to indicate when to breathe in and out, with your current heart rate positioned at the center of the screen. The Pro now sees the Epix match the three size options of the Fenix series, adding new heart rate sensors and new metrics that want to tell you whether you can easily run up those hills and go the ultra distance. OLATHE, Kan./May 31, 2023/PR Newswire – Garmin (NYSE: GRMN) today announced epix ™ Pro Series, its next-gen high-performance GPS smartwatches with a crystal-clear AMOLED display, rugged design and impressive battery life. Touting up to 31 days of battery life 1, epix Pro Series is loaded with all-day health monitoring and fitness metrics to help users stay active. Plus, with three sizes to choose from – 42mm, 47mm and 51mm – and a built-in LED flashlight on each one, it’s the perfect addition to any adventure. When combined with the return of the AMOLED display, an updated heart rate sensor array, and a handful of new software features, the Epix Pro appears to be the most complete and functional of Garmin's premium watches. As you may be aware, Garmin is preparing to launch new “Pro” editions of the smart watches Fenix 7 Series and Epix Pro (Gen2).The other new headline features are the flashlight and the two new software features: your Endurance score and Hill score. The Endurance score uses a variety of existing Garmin metrics, such as VO2 Max and training history, rolled into a single number to communicate how effective you’re likely to be at endurance exercises such as steady-state running or cycling. Another one that looks great on the Venu and Epix, you can throw some shapes onto your screen for a more fun look on your Garmin. The Garmin Epix Pro (Gen 2) feels like yet another move by Garmin to cover all the pricing bases and to ward off the Apple Watch Ultra competition. Is it a strong-performing sports watch? Absolutely. Does it need to exist? Probably not, but it gives those looking for a sports watch with the feel of a smartwatch more options to choose from. The thing is, all these smartwatches use the same excellent Garmin fitness platform and the Garmin Connect app, so if one is “too much,” then another may be just right. For my lifestyle, the Vivomove Trend is ideal, but for Digital Trends’ Editor-in-Chief Andrew Martonik, who runs marathons, the Forerunner 955 is the sweet spot. It’s not for me, but it could be perfect for you Andy Boxall/Digital Trends To begin, the Epix follows the standard Garmin 5-button design, but with a full touchscreen display as well. Garmin’s approach for this layout is that you can do any function you want via either touch or buttons. If you hate touch, you never have to use touch. If you hate buttons, the only time you need buttons is to start/stop/lap an activity. Equally, if you love touch for daily use but hate it for sport, you can even disable it during sports. Or disable it for running but keep it for hiking. The world is your oyster here.

But it's also being squeezed into an ever-growing Garmin lineup that still includes the very capable Epix (Gen 2) and Garmin Forerunner 965 as cheaper options. The touchscreen is only one part of the way you interact with the Epix Pro (Gen 2), as it also has five buttons on the side of the case. The layout and basic functionality are clear, but it does get confusing as you dig into menus, and when you press a button in an activity expecting it to do one thing, it does another. The on-screen details are often confusing, too, with acronyms used or numbers presented without much explanation. Andy Boxall/Digital TrendsElsewhere, there are a load of features we’ve not yet talked about that come as standard on the Fenix and Epix chassis. To start with there are Garmin’s impressive GPS credentials, perhaps the best on any running watch, with the ability to create and run your own courses and view your route on the watch. PacePro, meanwhile, allows you to race against your previous times on these courses, charting your improvement in tangible ways. Hill score is a little different, calculating how effective you are at running on inclines. Garmin says the Hill score is “calculated by using a combination of fitness and performance data. Higher scores indicate more skillful ascent running. Your score is also classified from recreational to elite, relative to others of the same age and gender, ensuring the progress you see is personally meaningful.” I love it as a feature; it’s eminently usable, and it’s even split into multiple sections – hill endurance, hill strength, and VO2 max – to help you understand how the hill score is calculated. There are three model variations depending on the size: theFenix 7S Pro, the7 Proand the7X Pro.Their dial sizes are42mm,47mmand51mm, respctively. This weather-centric face looks great on the Fenix series and the Garmin Enduro, pulling in current conditions from openweather.org. Finally, the all-sport Endurance Score seems to appeal to multidisciplinary athletes and combines your efforts across all sports, sadly you can’t meaningfully add them together! The New Tweaks
