With the popularity of ‘Rook With A Book’ sculpture we were asked by many people if we would create smaller versions of the Rook for interior display, although a smaller sculpture is possible to make, it would require many weeks of careful creation to get the same level of detail as the giant ‘Rook With A Book’ sculpture.
In a handmade leather apron, tall leather boots, and with long hair tied up for work, Rookledge looks the part of an old-world artisan with a London hipster’s edge, and yet he is far more than that. At first she was a bit confused trying to figure out why she had gotten a dictionary for her birthday, but that confusion quickly became delight when she discovered the treasures within! The materials selected to enclose the words: “Full fathom five, my father lies…” refer to Shakespeare’s play on many levels: dyed lavender and purple for suitably underwater hues, while a reindeer skin recovered from a Dutch brigantine that sank in 1786 constitutes one of the primary materials.In Blitz the third novel of the series it is explained that he can become invisible, but that the power does not extend to his clothing, and that he has increased resilience and strength. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. It’s a somewhat sinister story of the birds taking back the land and reclaiming their dinosaurs like dominance over man. Under general licences, millions of birds are killed in the UK every year without any real oversight or monitoring. Rookledge explains that this served as a daily reminder of how dark the human condition can be and to celebrate the freedom and opportunities he enjoys. To those who might argue that fine craftsmanship should be considered “an insubstantial pageant faded,” Rooks Books demonstrates that with sufficient space to utilize ancient techniques in new ways, these skills form the basis for such stuff “as dreams are made on. Rookledge explains that the label left him feeling akin to a “zoo exhibit” in his relationship with patrons.Rooks live in colonies and always nest in tall trees, using the same nests year after year, so there is no truth in the saying “that when Rooks build high it is going to be a fine summer”. His ability to think beyond the narrow confines of traditional bookbinding has allowed his company to expand in unexpected ways, most notably the creation of bespoke furniture and interiors for luxurious super yachts. Serendipity brought him into contact with one of the world’s leading yacht designers, who discovered Rooks Books at a fair. Gavin Rookledge, so obviously influenced by his father’s business acumen, outdoorsmanship, and admiration for the printed word, chose to mourn his father’s death with what is arguably one of his most masterful, but certainly one of his most personal projects to date. During this drive, we noticed the lack of children's books that shared the joys of unique stories like our son Carmine's.
