About this deal

We knew we wanted to play this game with at least some of our kids, too. We did expect there to be some difficulties with domain knowledge across generations.

The group may determine whether the 'no repeat' rule is in effect for a round. It's fun to play either way, but it's harder when you are not allowed to repeat answers that have already been used. For such a light game, Anomia can be great fun, especially with a group of friends. It adds the right amount of pressure to a seemingly easy task, which can have hilarious results. When a match occurs, the players with the matching cards must attempt to come up with a word or phrase that is reflected on their opponent's card. This continues until two symbols match, with players continuing to add to their pile so only the top card is currently visible. It was definitely surprising that our biggest fear turned out to be an asset in the funniest way. Recommended? If two players tie during a Face-Off, a third player will draw a card and flip it over for the two tied players. In this case, the two tied players are attempting to give an answer for the same card.

In the fact that this is a super simple game, there is one thing that may confuse you. Although, your brain is pretty powerful, so maybe not. There is something called a ‘wild card’. I know, sounds scary. The wild cards allow for the non matching symbols to match which will increase the number of things which you MUST be paying attention to. Notice that the card displays some text and a symbol. (If any Wild Cards are drawn in the next few steps, set them aside and draw again, we'll get to Wild Cards in #7). Normally, when you play Anomia, you cannot look things up. But with this game, when nobody knew an answer, it was just a rush to look it up on phones. It was fine, and it actually made it a lot funnier. Abel, S., Schultz, A., Radermacher, I., Willmes, K., & Huber, W. (2005). Decreasing and increasing cues in naming therapy for aphasia. Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation, 17(6), 411–422.The player who finishes blurting out a correct answer first wins the Face-Off. The winner takes the loser's top card and places it, face-down, in their separate Winning Pile. The winner's top card stays where it is.

The speed-googling and “how can I search for this most efficiently?” One of the kids was talking to their phone – that’s not the fastest way, just so you know. No, it’s not. A Wild Card displays two different symbols. If those two symbols are in play (i.e. if they appear on the top of any two player's Play Piles) then those two players must Face-Off.
