About this deal

is our team’s 50th Anniversary. We were the founding Dartmoor Rescue team (there are now four) and so it’s going to be a big year of celebration. It also makes a nice excuse to do something you’ve been thinking about for ages… Walking all the tors on Dartmoor in aid of the team to mark its 50th year and my 25th year seemed fitting. This ancient western oak woodland's a great place to leave behind the pressures of everyday life. The path goes from one end of the woods to the other, with the sound of the river's many rapids and cascades ever present. Dartmoor National Park was one of the first National Parks established in 1951, and it sits slap bang in the middle of Devon so it's easy to reach from north, south, east or west. Steeperton Tor. As above. Beautiful tor in the north section of Dartmoor overlooking a natural amphitheatre of moorland. Amazing views and a great place to visit from Belstone in winter when it has snowed.

I will not be held liable for any damages caused, as this is just a piece of advice as to how difficult tor bagging can get. The rule of the thumb from me is to always try and view the outcrop from public land, and if this is not possible due to tree cover etc, then please respect landowners' wishes by staying away if they do not welcome visitors. I've found that being granted landowner permission to visit an outcrop is one of the most rewarding things I have achieved during this challenge. The Dartmoor National Park official visitor guide - DARTMOOR- A Timeless Landscape - is designed to be a taster menu for Dartmoor's bountiful delights. It is stuffed full of colour photographs to encourage and remember Dartmoor's glorious and intriguing landscape. Copies can be bought HERE . If you will be navigating across the high moor and want to find out more about the wild open space of Dartmoor get a copy of our Ten Tors Navigators Notes.Get to know Dartmoor’s towns and villages and learn about the landscape and rich history of the surrounding areas with this series of introductory walking routes. Find out more about Dartmoor's landscape and the people who live and work here by meeting one of our upland farmers. All Ten Tors groups have the chance to meet and talk to a Dartmoor farmer before one of their training days. The more I think about it, the less prepared I realise I am. Despite years of walking and camping on Dartmoor, I’ve never wild camped alone before. Sure, I’ve been in a tent on my own hundreds of times, but there’s always been someone else nearby. Odd that it’s never happened and fitting, I feel, to break that never on Dartmoor.

Nestled beside the West Dart River in Dartmoor National Park lies one of only three remote high-altitude oak woods on Dartmoor.
