About this deal

If you do not pack enough pulp into your briquette maker, you will not be able to get the level of compression needed to expel as much water as possible. I did however mix some in with the paper pulp to bulk it out which works if you put in the right amount - put too much in though and the blocks disintegrate once you've pressed the water out - a binder might have solved that though. They burn for between 10 minutes and 1 hour, using waste such as shredded junk mail and newspapers, tea bags, twigs, dry leaves or sawdust. We aim to continue the supply of presses bur there will be times when we must restrict the supply so as to keep up with the demand. Once you have completed the pressing process, raise the leaver arm and place the top pressure plate above and out of the way.

I had one of the cheao briquette makers when we moved house as we had so much packing paper and cardboard left over.At that point you just need to go back and add more paper pulp - I'm guessing the mix was something like 75% paper pulp to 25% wood shavings/dust max but that's just a guess.

It's a lot easier to get hold of waste paper than pallets, unless you happen to be in a trade or location where scrap pallets are plentiful. To make the bricks, just soak and stir the paper in a bucket or trash can until mushy, scoop the pulp into the press, crush the handles down to squeeze out the excess water, leave the bricks to fully dry out, and then use as needed. I made myself a pallet breaking bar, it's 5' length of 40mm tube with a large curved fork on the end, you insert the fork over one slat and under another and just pull it apart. It takes 3 or 4 coke hods full at a time and is very controllable from slow to very hot and fast burning. The upside - most of the volume you start out with will end up as "waste" that can be added to the briquettes Electric Heater Accessories Gas Cylinder Storage Gas Heater Accessories Propane/Butane Hoses and RegulatorsI got the press after seeing a friend use one and realizing I could make my own briquettes for the firebowl. When using our press the pulp won't leak through the bottom so no need to line the base (as is required in other forms of presses). The paper/cardboard was shredded, the added to the bins then soaked in water and then stirred with one of those plasterers paddles to create a fine mush.

References to flashback are relevent but you can achieve a similar alarming event - "flash-up" - if you load up a hot bed with sawdust and shavings and the volatile gases do not immediately ignite or go out after shutting the fire doors. I initially pulped all the paper with a homemade blender - worked ok but took a while making a 5 gallon drum at a time. Part 1 will focus on the construction of the briquettes and why I chose the filler media that I did. That was one thing I was going to try (but with cement rather than flour), but never did get around to it. I did look into this, lots of YouTube videos and tutorials available, it looks like a very very messy job, you need to soak the shavings/paper/cardboard until it turns to mush then put it in the compressor and press the water out, then leave it to dry again.I am pleased to report my efforts were successful and I discovered a quick and easy way to make my own paper bricks. To use, simply roll and wedge unwanted paper into the Logsaver, tearing to size if needed, using a varied mix of paper and card type - too much shiny stuff and glossy magazines at once is difficult to burn. I believe life is too short to waste hours shredding paper and then wait days for the paper to soak before making something that will only be tossed in the fire and burned. The single most important piece of advice I can offer anyone who wants to make their own paper briquettes from recycled newspaper, cardboard, woodchips, straw, and sawdust even adding charcoal (you should not use to much or any glossy colour printed paper). Just thought I'd upload 2 early pics of the logpress I've made after looking at others on youtube (1 of which was a link earlier in this thread).
