This card reader sports the classic combo of SD and CompactFlash slots, both being the fastest of their type - UHS-II, and UDMA 7. You can use both simultaneously, and the case’s design means a card of each type can be stored inside the reader, protected by a hinged rubber door that closes around them. What sets this reader apart, aside from the USB Type-C connection, is the build quality and design. It’s a solid, well thought out piece of kit, and as far as card readers go, it’s one of the best we’ve seen. ProGrade Digital’s single-slot CFexpress card reader uses USB 3.2 Gen 2 technology and is designed to support the transfer of a large files, namely 4K video. Of interest here is the fact that Sandisk’s smaller card sizes – which sport very similar performance metrics on the label – perform terribly relative to the 512 GB card. Unfortunately, this seems to be the norm. Sony’s smaller sizes also perform poorly in the other tests relative to the 512 GB, although they are keeping up with their bigger sibling in this test of initial speed capacity. What makes CFexpress memory cards so special is the PCIe 3.0 interface technology which provides 1 GB/s data transfer per lane. Regarding the low sample sizes, the consistency between bodies makes me confident they aren’t introducing bias, but an anomalous performer among the cards would definitely goof up the results. On the outside there isn't much to get excited about with CFexpress, as CFexpress card closely resemble XQD cards, but it's this very compatibility that's a key CFexpress attraction. If you've not encountered an XQD - and by extension, CFexpress - card before, imagine a blend between a traditional CompactFlash card and an SD card and you won't be far off. With many current high-end cameras now utilizing both the CFexpress and SD card formats, it makes sense to get a card reader that also takes both standards. This offering from Prograde Digital is a high quality choice and an ideal match for today's mirrorless and DSLR cameras. Sony’s XQD card reader is durable and fast. There aren’t many XQD card readers on the market, but the QDA-SB1 is one of the few that’s made by a known brand, and one that makes memory cards to boot.On the one hand these figures are hugely impressive results that eclipse any other memory card we've ever tested. However, aside from the 1678MB/s theoretical read speed score we achieved, which comes very close to the 1700MB/s claimed by Sandisk, in every other respect our CFexpress card didn't reach its claimed maximum speeds. The market for CFexpress Type A card readers is still relatively new, and the options are somewhat limited. However, there are several models available that offer impressive transfer speeds and convenient features to help streamline your workflow.
