About this deal

A gorgeous faux leather volume full of exquisite sketches and colourful illustrations of Middle-earth - ideal for the true Tolkien fan. This atlas features colored maps and illustrations throughout, but despite being created long after the releases of Peter Jackson’s famous Lord of the Rings movies, the book contains neither cinematic stills nor film-inspired drawings.

Here, Day's information is concise and to the point, giving us a history and overview of Middle Earth that makes it easy to follow and understand, lots of the text just being one to a few pages on each topic and location, and I found it very fun and interesting to read. Pages 38 and 41: Belegost has been moved 150 miles further south than previously shown to the middle of the southern Blue Mountains. One quite striking woodcut by Ivar Allen, a stand out of the book, features Manwe seated on a throne, apparently holding a thunderbolt weapon depicted as a Greek God, it is really interesting. To be blunt, I thought the majority of the illustrations were at best boring and I found many of them to be downright ugly. I think this is a light-hearted book to dip into, but, if you're a die-hard Tolkien fan like me, then don't expect too much from it.

Stentor Danielson, a Tolkien scholar, notes that Tolkien did not provide the same "detailed textual history" to contextualise his maps as he did for his writings. It's a shame, because this book does have a nice cover and the art is lovely by and large, it's the writing that lets it down. A Canadian living in Toronto, Day has also published over 30 other books of mythology, history, fantasy, fiction, and poetry, for both adults and children.Remarkables REMARKABLES Intriguing, stunning, or otherwise remarkable books These include fine editions, foreign publications exceptional for their interest or production, special editions and some first-rate books from very small publishers. It gets really interesting when it comes to additional information such as the names of the cities and the (wild) animals of Middle-Earth. At the same time, these overviews also offer an extended, informative background on the LOTR books/ films.I learned way more from it than I was expecting, and besides the urge to re-read The Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy, I think I might be ready to go on an adventure and finally begin The Silmarillion! David Days best-selling books on the life and works of JRR Tolkien include: A Tolkien Bestiary, Tolkien: the Illustrated Encyclopedia, Tolkien's Ring, The World of Tolkien and The Hobbit Companion. And after the 1996 publication of his Quest For King Arthur, Day was commissioned by the Birmingham Royal Ballet as dramaturge for the epic two-part ballet, Arthur I and Arthur II (2000).
