About this deal

I really liked the premise but there were too many creepy men and I didn’t like that there wasn’t an overarching plot.

Early in the story it's established that 'History' (some nebulous entity with no attempt at an explanation) won't allow timelines and events to be disrupted. History itself is not very keen on people changing it, so there are blocks in place to avoid that from happening. In this initial book, we visit dinosaurs, great library fires, epic wars and battles, and other great historical events. I have enjoyed the the first two books in Willis' time travel series very much and hoped for more along that genre with this series. Escape Rating A+: When I picked this up, I was expecting it to be something like The Invisible Library, which was marvelous in its own way. When she battles the evil characters, I kinda laughed at how she just survives anything thrown at her, but it's good drama. Leon sounded like a dirty and cold-hearted old man, which is totally at odds for how he is in the book. Extreme disappointment with Audible and Accent for allowing this project to continue with all of the changes made; with some anger at the changes made which are contrary not only to the original, but with the philosophy of the 'world'; and sadness that new listeners would think that this is St.

Jodi Taylor is the internationally bestselling author of the Chronicles of St Mary's series, the story of a bunch of disaster prone individuals who investigate major historical events in contemporary time. I agree that there are a lot of characters, and some of the secondary ones are interchangeable (Guthrie/Peterson/etc). Maintaining the appearance of harmless eccentrics is not always within their power - especially given their propensity for causing loud explosions when things get too quiet. A New Dictionary of Quotations on Historical Principles from Ancient and Modern Sources, Selected and Edited by H.

The story opens with a quote attributed to the great historian Arnold Toynbee, that “History is just one damned thing after another…” What I find more interesting after having finished the book is that when Toynbee made that famous statement, he was actually quoting someone else, another historian named Elbert Hubbard. Max is generally a disaster magnet of eye-watering and bowel-loosening propensity at the best of times, but when she and her partner get the mission to go back and observe the dinosaurs, it seems like the absolutely coolest thing ever.

Mary's, both the institution and the people who give their lives to it, are quintessentially English in the way that they muddle through from one crisis to the next. There are several inconsistencies in plot and characterization, particularly where one character, at a key point in the story, acts in a way that seems completely out of character for him. It may be that these little editorial issues are more annoying when I read the book (as opposed to listening to it), but I can live with this. If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Just One Damned Thing After Another? In fact, nearly no use: the main conceit of historians using time travel in their studies was done better many times over by Connie Willis; the big "twist" is the starting point for many other time travel narratives, and seemed so obvious that the characters not figuring it out sooner just makes them look dumb. Like Max makes a big deal about how rigorous the training is, but without actually conveying that in any way, and it's also not explained why they can't just recruit more people for the training in the first place. Things go wrong almost immediately: Barclay opens the dinosaur cages instead of locking them, creating a bloodbath in Ronan's tourist encampment; Farrell, Peterson, Guthrie and Markham get lost before the unit is extracted back to St Mary's; Dr Bairstow is seriously injured and subsequently replaced by Barclay as Acting Director.
