About this deal

Mothership has easily twice the mechanics of Death in Space at a character level, but since you aren’t rolling any of those plot hooks, character creation is equally quick in both. Hubs can either be a space station or a ship, and they represent the reason that player characters do the jobs they do. However, if a void point is used to gain advantage and still fails, they get a void corruption which means the player rolls a 1d6 and if they land on a number less than their remaining void points total, they get a void corruption.

I do like how they have it set up, but even as a GM I handed them all weapons right from the start yet they still didn’t manage to win. There is one default difficulty number, and all rolls are rolled against that number, or against an opposed roll from another character. As the PCs look for work and interact with NPCs, they can end up helping or hindering different factions and changing how the expected chain of events might evolve. What the authors particularly care about is defining the mood of the game and the atmospheres and themes to be explored in the game. Characters might have a Cosmic Mutation, which is a special ability that can be triggered by spending Void Points.They spent a night sheltering in the capsule from the cold, and a second night in a temporary hut built by rescuers before skiing with them to a clearing where a helicopter flew them to Perm.

These tend to be simple abilities, like being able to send a short telepathic message or controlling machines at a distance. The strut and aft end of the tank failed, allowing the top of the SRB to rotate into the top of the tank and causing it to explode. This article lists verifiable spaceflight-related accidents and incidents resulting in human fatality or near-fatality during flight or training for crewed space missions, and testing, assembly, preparation or flight of crewed and robotic spacecraft. If hostilities continue to escalate, the PCs may even need to decide the best time to make their exit.

Given that the book describes campaign creation as collaborative, that would be a perfect time to establish on-screen and off-screen elements and hard stops, as well as active safety tools. An ideal setup for a System Split, Death in Space and Mothership are, on a purely mechanical basis, very close. Spacecraft and crew still splashed down safely, at a slightly higher than normal velocity, on the two remaining main parachutes. When used in combat or stressful situations, (or when a ship gets shot for maximum damage in ship combat) things have a chance to lose Condition.

Don’t expect to be powerful though because starting off with abilities, you have to roll the same 1d4 twice and the ability score will be the first number subtracted by the second number. A 20-sided die is added to the score of the relevant characteristic: Body, Dexterity, Savvy or Technology. Unlike some more traditional adventures, the player characters are only assumed to arrive at the station, but not to have any specific goal in mind. The void corrupts and infects, whispering strange words through an omnipresent white noise that grows more intense every day.

These mutations are awesome, but unfortunately, the vast majority of starting characters will not have a Cosmic Mutation as there is only a very small chance of getting one during character creation.
