About this deal

Budget tool brand DEWINNER have worked out a clever way to make decent quality power tools at remarkable prices. Their electric palm router set is ideal for someone who’s just starting out on their woodworking journey. It includes everything a budding DIYer will need to try out one of the most versatile tools out there. A router is an essential tool for your woodworking kit, helping you shape edges and grooves, create joints and hollow out materials with precision. Shop our range and find the perfect plunge router, palm router or biscuit jointer to give every project a professional finish.

Our range also includes biscuit jointers that are designed for excellent manoeuvrability and easy handling. They create crescent shaped holes in both pieces of timber, which can then be filled with a compressed biscuit to hold them in place. We have a selection of versatile biscuit jointers that cut 0, 10 and 20 biscuit sizes, providing more flexibility for all of your woodworking projects. The RP0900X router from the Makita Corporation is the Japanese company's entry-level plunge router. Like all Makita tools, the basic router is a solidly-built machine which has been precision engineered and built to the highest of standards. It is a 1/4-inch router that is lightweight, easy to control and provides a smooth output. Like most 1/4-inch routers, it is easier to use than 1/2-inch routers but even more so given its small size and low weight. No list of the best palm routers would be complete without a Bosch Professional router. The GKF 12V-8 is a radical re-design of the standard shape palm router and forms part of Bosch’s “blue” line of professional 12 Volt tools. This means it’s made with professional users in mind and will be robust, reliable, and ready for anything. Other useful design features on the Makita machine include a flat-topped body which allows it to be flipped over and balanced inverted for bit changes. The machine also has relatively small handles making it easy to operate by just about anyone, although users with larger hands might find the handles a little too small for total comfort.

The Hikoki (originally Hitachi) M12VE is a well-built 1/2” wood router that houses a powerful 2000W motor with variable speed control that runs spindle rotation anywhere from 8000 RPM up to 22,000 RPM. The router comes with collets for both 1/4” and 1/2” bit shanks permitting a wide selection of router bits to be used with this Hikoki router. The 124799 has a fine depth adjustment, variable speed control and a soft-start, and comes with 5 different collets (1/4", 1/2", 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm), two different guide bushes, parallel, circular and roller guides as well as a measurement bar all within a reasonable-quality plastic case. However, the good news stops there. The build of the machine is not up to the standard of competitor professional machines, with reports that some of the plastic controls can break off if they are not handled with great care. The plunge mechanism can also be a little temperamental, jamming if pressure is not applied evenly across the router when plunging. Like many other power-tools in this Bosch range, there is the ubiquitous Softgrip Zones on the handles, which make things a little more comfortable, while a transparent chip guard keeps things safe.

Taking its power from a 12V Lithium-Ion battery, the GKF means you can work at any angle or in any place without worrying about tripping over cables. It’s ideal for working above your head or in awkward spots. It’s incredibly light at just over 1 kg, compared to other palm routers like the DeWalt D26200. There’s a 710 Watt motor on board that can spin ¼” or 3/8” shank bits up from 13,000 to a maximum of 33,000 rpm. Its speed-adjustable as well by turning the wheel on top. DEWINNER have included the normal accessories such as a straight and curved guide, but they’ve gone a bit further than the competition. A plunge router is perfect for creating decorative patterns on furniture, mortises, dowels and dadoes for joinery, or inlay recesses. I’ve used plunge routers on several large furniture projects, and have seen them used to cut out interior letters for a signage project. There is some variety in plunge routers though, so make sure to take these considerations into account when choosing one. It has a 1,400 Watt motor with a soft start that powers the router from an impressive 11,000 – 28,000 rpm and the 55 mm plunge depth can be finely adjusted for intricate work. One of the best features I found on this plunge router is Bosch’s Constant Electronic system that maintains a stable cutting speed no matter what material you’re working with. It’s features like this that help to reduce tear-out and ensure a smooth operation. One other notable issue some users of the Hikoki M12VE router have flagged is that router bits can sometimes be difficult to remove from the collet after routing, on occasion necessitating the use of more extreme methods of extracting the bits (such as pliers), and sometimes damaging the bits in the process. Some users have clarified the need to fully unscrew the nut that holds the bit within the collet, but this appears to be only a partial solution, working for some users and not others.

The plunging mechanism on the Hikoki M12VE slides easily and smoothly unlike many budget level wood routers which are often stiffer and plunge less readily. The router is relatively lightweight and is less noisy compared to other competitor routers in its category class. Other neat features include adjustable handles for maximum user comfort and thoughtful design that makes it relatively easy to integrate it into a router table. One of the most powerful routers I’ve tested out, the Triton TRA001 is a seriously powerful bit of kit.

Dust Collection: Wood routers can create a lot of dust and wood shavings, which can create a frustrating mess to clean up. If you plan to do a lot of routing, or just want to cut down on cleanup time, make sure to choose a plunge router that is compatible with your current dust collection capabilities, whether that’s a shop vacuum or a dedicated dust collection system. Overall, the DeWalt DWE625 is a very good precision router as one might expect from a premium power tool company and given the cost of the machine. Although it is not a router to turn away from and diehard fans of DeWalt tools will likely be happy with it, overall build quality could be slightly better especially when compared to similar priced premium routers from other well-established power tool brands. You can drop the cutting head down to an impressive 68 mm. That’s 13 mm deeper compared with the DeWalt D26204K or the Bosch POF 1400! Weighing in at 6.4 kg, it’s a heavy tool but attached to a table it doesn’t matter. That’s where the TRA001 really shines. Fix it to a table and you’ve got a capable table router as well. For the money this is pretty good as a first router. I've bevelled a few oak boards and shelves with it and made an oak headboard so far. Fine adjustment and control is a bit fiddly and requires some workarounds but at this price you have to expect some compromises. It suits my purposes so I'm not complaining. It will not do heavy duty cycle work, you will need a larger collet and cutters if you intend to work with a lot of hardwood and using big cuts.”A motor powers the router, and you can perform various tasks of different strengths depending on it. Experts recommend a mid-sized router because it can cover a wide range of tasks. From typical routing tasks to moderate profiling cuts, a mid-sized router can take care of it all. Some mid-sized routers have such a powerful machine that they can handle large profiling cuts as well. Usually, a mid-sized router has a 1.7 – 2.2 HP machine and is dual mode. A small-sized router can be too small to cater to all your needs, and an extensively large-sized device may be too big for you to work with and carry. Besides, if you are looking for a router for your DIY projects at home, a large-sized machine can be a waste of money. What Features to Look For in a Plunge Router? With a 2,400 Watt motor that can spin a router bit from 8,000 – 21,000 rpm, there’s a serious amount of low-end power. It might not have the highest speed compared to the Trend T4EK, but it’s plenty for most DIY jobs.
