About this deal

Naturally, any sealant you use for sealing bathroom sinks or kitchen sinks must be waterproof and mould resistant. UniBond sanitary sealants are specially designed for use in the kitchen and bathroom; they create strong, flexible seals and offer long-term protection from mould. Something I learn since this picture, was to cut the overflow pipe down prevent from sitting on the bend and stagnating. The P-trap is the U-shaped part of your sink drain which looks like an inverted P. It holds a little amount of water at all times, preventing sewer gases from coming up to your house.

If your kitchen/bathroom sink is leaking from below, you will need to remove it, apply a new sealant and then install it again. You could also be installing a new sink and wondering which sealant to use to create a watertight and long-lasting seal. Remove old sealant. Scrape it off with a putty knife or cutting tool. Make the job even easier with UniBond Silicone Sealant Remover. If you decide to use silicone caulk, apply a bead of the same under the rim of the sink flange as well as around the sink drain opening. Carefully insert the flange through the drain opening and push it down strongly to get a strong seal. Clear the space under the kitchen sink. If you use the space under your kitchen sink to store stuff remove them to allow yourself enough space to work with. The problem is i have a bit of a leak at this joint, even then the screw end is tightened as far as it will go the outside pipe can slide and move in/out (though to get it completely out would take a good pull). The reason you need to disconnect the P-trap is that it is always a good time to clean it as well. This is especially important if your sink is draining slowly as well. You can as well omit this step. While holding the overflow kitchen sink waste pipe, thread the screw through from the sink side to grip it. Scrape off old plumber’s putty or caulk from the top of the drain opening as well as under the rim of the flange. I needed to cut a series of waste pipes and elbows first while also ensuring my waste pipe wasn't too steep. The reason our sink plugs wouldn’t hold water was because the rubber washer underneath needed to be replaced. You can pull apart the plug by untwisting the middle handle part, which allows you to replace the rubber washer underneath. This is the seal that allows the plug to stop water going down the drain. It didn’t matter how I contorted the washer, the plugs wouldn’t keep the water in. Side note: some people don't trust these gaskets as they can leak. I've never had any problems. But you can use a ring of putty or silicone instead, then go to the next stage and remove the excess. Screwing the Kitchen Sink Waste Drain A pop-up sink stopper has 3 rods which help it to work as it does. The one connected to the drainpipe (and hooked to the actual stopper body) is called a pivot rod. The rod/strip with holes on it where the pivot rod is connected is called a clevis rod.

The other end has a screw type fitting but the pipe that goes out to the drain is smaller and has no thread on it so it sort of slots over a smaller ring of the internal pipe work and then the circular plastic screw cap/head screws onto the internal pipe work. I recently cut a hole in my utility kitchen worktop as part of my latest YouTube series. However, after plumbing up my new tap, I then needed to learn how to install the kitchen sink waste and trap. Apply the sealant. When you’re happy with the flow and you’re sure that the surface is completely dry, apply the sealant around the sink. Even pressure is important; maintain a steady flow to create a smooth layer of sealant that prevents moisture and mildew.

Silicone caulk is a modern solution to sealing sink drains (among other applications), mostly preferred for its waterproof qualities. If properly done, a sink drain installed using silicone caulk can last for a long time. The kitchen sink basket strainer plug for our double bowl sink had been leaking for a couple of months and it was driving me batty. It made washing up difficult because the water would drain away while washing up the pots and pans. Even more frustrating was when both plugs stopped sealing, so we couldn’t swap the plugs. It’s one of those things you don’t realise is annoying until you have to fill the sink and you can’t. But you soon forget until you need to fill the sink again!I took it all to pieces before the house gets busy this morning and the rubber seals look fine (this pipework is only 6 months old so dont think anything has perished).

Apply the bead of plumber’s putty under the rip of the sink flange to form a perfect circle underneath it. Cut off the excess putty. With the pivot rod out of the way, you will only need to lift off the stopper from the top of the sink. So under my sink its pretty straight forward there is a U-bend like trap that connects to a 90 degree fitting which at one end screws onto the U bend and the other end its a bit different. Yes, you can continue to return items as normal as long as you follow the government guidelines about leaving your house. If you clean the drain with water, make sure that your dry it completely. You can as well wipe it with a bit of rubbing alcohol.Next, you'l need to add your sink waste trap. It's a good idea to work from here, then lead to where your waste pipe after. Note I connected this much later, hence why I have something underneath to catch water. Working on the Waste Pipe Here's a step by step guide on how I fitted the kitchen sink waste pipe and trap in my utility. It also includes a trap connected to a washing machine hose. Clean the area. Avoid exposing the surface to water. Spray a cloth or paper towel with household cleaner and clean the area. Wipe dry. Then clean again with bleach, before rinsing and leaving to dry. This means my washing machine waste and sink waste are hooked up and drain in the same place. Or, you could bore another hole through the wall, which I didn't want to do.
