About this deal

From 1855 the distillery was operated by John B Sheriff of Glasgow [7] and from 1895 J.B. Sherrif & Co Ltd until 1921. In 1921 it was acquired by Benmore Distilleries Limited which was taken over in 1929 by the Distillery Company Ltd. This resulted in the closure of the distillery. [8] Port Charlotte whisky gets its name from the village of Port Charlotte, a white-walled and windswept sort of place just a couple of kilometers down the road from Bruichladdich. This release, Port Charlotte 10, is distilled from 100% Scottish barley peated to 40 ppm. Ppm stands for parts per million phenol, a common method for for gauging the smokiness of malted barley that isn’t always useful for consumers. The distillate ages at least 10 years on Islay in a mix of first- and second-fill American whiskey casks, and second-fill French wine casks. It’s bottled at 50% ABV and, like all of Bruichladdich’s whiskies, without coloring or chill filtration. Fire in Islay". Glasgow Herald. Scotland. 24 May 1861 . Retrieved 17 October 2021– via British Newspaper Archive. Port Charlotte is Bruichladdich’s heavily-peated single malt, with a peating level of around 40ppm. Bruichladdich describes Port Charlotte as having ‘the power of peat with the elegance, complexity and floral top notes for which our Bruichladdich stills are famous’. On 18 May 1861 a fire broke out in the kiln at the distillery which resulted in the destruction of the kiln and about 20 bushels of malt. The villagers managed to extinguish the fire before the rest of the distillery was damaged. [5]

From Bruichladdich's super heavily peated Octomore range, Event Horizon was released to celebrate Fèis Ìle 2019. Matured for 12 years in a combo of Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks, this single malt is peated to a whopping 162.6 PPM. There too Bruichladdich planned to create a new distillery in which to produce heavily-peated whisky, but the plans never came to fruition, and it seems highly unlikely that distilling will return to the village since the acquisition of Bruichladdich by French company Rémy Cointreau in 2012.It’s not aggressive, it’s not weak, it’s just well balanced and damn good. Though, to be honest, I’ve never met a PC10 I didn’t like. It may shift and change a bit from one release to the next, but it’s always a solid, tasty, Islay Scotch that covers an array of notes to cover an array of preferences. I’ve had a decent amount of Port Charlotte over the years and here on The Whiskey Jug, I’ve covered the tasty PC6, a 12-year-old Burns’ Night Port Charlotte, an older version of the Port Charlotte Scottish Barley, an older Port Charlotte Islay Barley, an OG PC10 and yesterday the Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2012. They’ve all been delicious, but this… this is something a bit different. Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. Peat smoke note with smoked ham and pepper. Dried wild herbs, lemon and lime peel zest, some grapefruit. Almond chips and hazelnut pieces compete with each other, marzipan and nougat. On the tongue, too, a note of warm asphalt slowly spreads, so that the taste is a fairly congruent continuation of the nose. Say hello to the final Scotch in our peated Bruichladdich run: Port Charlotte 10 Years. I did a PC10 review a few years ago, but I wanted to see if more than the bottle got a facelift. And, spoiler, it did. But that’s to be expected with a distillery whose goal is flavor, not consistency.
