About this deal

Toning: The copper in a 1964 SMS penny can cause it to tone or change color over time, developing a red or brown hue. With coins as common as these, priority is given to the most special patinas, so a BN or RB may be undervalued, while an RD makes the coin more expensive because it is so rare in common coins. All other things being equal, the most valuable copper coins are those graded red. Next in line are red and brown, with brown being the least valuable.

Most 1964 pennies are worth only their face value. And even coins in uncirculated condition are likely to be worth only a few dollars. Where is the mint mark on a 1964 penny? Easy, just below the date of coinage. How do I know the quality of my 1964 from Penny?

The early coins had a simple image of two ears of wheat on their reverse. But 1959 marked 150 years since Lincoln’s birth, and it was considered time for a change. There are several characteristics to look for to determine if a penny is a 1964 SMS (Special Mint Set) penny: The portrait was the work of an artist named Victor David Brenner. It shows Lincoln’s head in profile facing e right. Brenner said he wanted to show Lincoln at his most engaging, and had imagined him reading to a child.

The decimal Halfpenny measured just 17.14mm, weighed only 1.78g and was only ever minted in bronze. It was the smallest ever UK coin. As a result, it was never very popular and was withdrawn in 1984. The first of which were introduced by around 785 by the Anglo-Saxon King Offa of Mercia. The name Penny was derived from the German ‘pfennig’ and old English ‘pennige’. Pennies have been part of history in Great Britain since Anglo-Saxon times. It is thought the first Halfpenny coins were minted for Henry I, who reigned from 1100 – 1135. These are extremely rare and could possibly have been only test coins, which may not have entered circulation. As the name would suggest the value was half of a penny. The main factor to consider is the quality, as in any other coin, as we will see later, but now let’s talk about the patina. These 1964-D Special Mint Set pennies are highly valued by collectors because they are the only circulating US pennies composed of 95% copper issued after 1837, and because of their limited production. These pennies can be distinguished from regular 1964 pennies by their sharp strikes, matte-like finishes, and distinctive toning. In 1937 the reverse design changed from Britannia to be replaced by Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hind.

In the 1964 Penny, as in the rest of the modern cents up to 1982, due to its high copper content (95%), there are three different patinas, mostly. These are collected by three different abbreviations, BN, RB, and RD. Each one is more complex to find than the previous one, which is why the price increases due to the difficulty. If you think you have a rare 1964 penny, you should have it certified by a reputable 3rd-party coin gradings firm such as PCGS, NGC, ICG, or ANACS. Then, if you wish to sell it, offer it to a coin dealer who can pay you what it’s worth. Rare series: Cameo type editions, SMS coins and D variants The most valuable 1964 pennies are special strikes. Only a handful were produced, and they have a different finish to regular or proof pennies. Their appearance is described as “satin finish”, and it’s shinier than regular pennies but less glossy than proofs. The top of the coin has the country name, also following the curve of the edge. Beneath it, written on the horizontal, is the Latin motto “E pluribus unum”. The words mean “From the many, one” and honor the creation of the USA from the individual states. Other Features of the 1964 Penny

At most grades, values are similar to the Philadelphia pennies. And again, unless your coin has an interesting error, it’s unlikely to be worth much if it isn’t red. The higher the grade, the higher the price increases exponentially, since it is a factor of great importance, especially in coins that tend to circulate a lot, as in the case of cents. Look at the obverse (or “heads” side) of a 1964 penny, and the chances are it will look very familiar. It carries the same image of President Lincoln that’s been appearing on cents for over 100 years. They were prepared using specially prepared dies and highly polished planchets, and have a glossy finish and sharp details. And as they were aimed at collectors, all are in uncirculated condition. We are indebted to Declan Magee Coins and Numista member Sjoelund for their kind permission to reproduce the images below which list some of the varieties for this series. This type of error is known as a re-punched mint mark, sometimes abbreviated in coin listings to RPM. A 1964-D penny in circulated condition is worth its face value of one cent. However, if you have a 1964-D penny in uncirculated condition or as a Special Mint Set (SMS) penny, it could be worth significantly more. That large mintage means that it’s still very easy to find standard 1964 pennies. And the vast majority are worth only their face value.
