About this deal

What’s most moving about this show is the painful honesty of it: the script contains all the teenage awkwardness you would expect from verbatim responses, and to their credit, the company capture this in the integrity of their performance …It’s the finest production I’ve seen so far this year…Take your children.

Overwhelmingly the element that had most impact was the fact it's a true story, about a real person. This play, which runs at around 90 minutes with no interval, is a love letter to Daniel Spargo-Mabbs. Cobie Scott-Ward shatters the audience’s hearts into a million pieces with her performance, particularly shining as Fiona, Dan’s mother.

I’m not that stupid” attitude but sitting there with her last night and seeing how much it affected her emotionally and the conversation we had after made me think that she’s not.

This poignant and eminently readable biography of the play is drawn from interviews with Dan's family, friends and the OYT company. A spine chilling monologue about the funeral is well acted and so poignant that it could stand alone. Amy Zoldan demonstrates incredible versatility as she glides from drama teacher to immature teenager to deeply in love girlfriend. What's more, Wheeller has an active presence on social media, an incredibly well-resourced YouTube channel and, if he can, he'll come into your school (in person or virtually) to work with your students. A verbatim play written by Mark Wheeller using the testimonies of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs’ friends and family.I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won't Die is the true story of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs, just 16 years old when he died of an MDMA overdose – the title being his final words to his mum. The play is topped and tailed by filmed interviews with Dan’s mother and father and his girlfriend Jenna, communicating the love he inspired. It includes a detailed scheme of work created by Annette Hulme, Head of Academic Drama at Leicester Grammar School. The latter can feel overwhelming for non-design candidates, but asking students to distil how they see the play through a front cover or production poster is a simple but effective visual extension of asking what the play is about.
