About this deal

The old-school influences don’t stop there. The Marshal’s head and the axe are direct nods to the 1998 Captain who was originally introduced in the limited edition of the starter set that was released for the third edition of the game. Another heraldic detail, which you can see in SRM’s Marshall below, is the painting of the Templar cross in white over the helmet faceplate. It’s a pretty striking effect and looks great on models you want to make stand out.

Metallics are all just my standard recipes. For silver it’s Leadbelcher with Nuln Oil all over then a Stormhost Silver highlight, and for gold a Retributor Armour base, Reikland Fleshshade wash in the recesses, and Stormhost Silver highlight. If I’m feeling fancy I’ll toss a Liberator Gold highlight in before the silver, but you won’t generally notice the difference. There’s been heated discussion among fans as to whether this brand new Castellan is, in fact, a Primaris Space Marine (wearing unorthodox power armour that closely resembles older patterns) or whether he is not Primaris at all, but rather GW’s first newly released Firstborn Space Marine inquite a while. Each miniature is covered with unique details, suggesting that they all have their own personal artificer to work on their equipment. “They even have nicer chains of devotion than the rest of the Chapter,” Maxime points out. The Castellan is based closely on the iconic cover art by John Blanche from the third edition of Warhammer 40,000. Designing this miniature came with its own challenges as “he doesn’t follow the modern design language of the rest of the range”. alternate arm options (one holding a bolt carbine, one holding a grenade, and one carrying an Initiate's helmet)Everything about the Crusader Squad suggests tradition and, well, eternal crusade. Their tabards become more damaged as brothers move up the hierarchy as “a bit of a symbolism to represent that they are a fleet-based Chapter”. GW says the model has “two choices of head and a selection of weapons”– though we’ve only seen the above, bare-headed example so far, with a Master-crafted Power Sword and Plasma Pistol. Hefting a customised combi-flamer and Power Axe, and modelled directly from theskull-shoulderedTemplar character in the middle ground of John Blanche’s famous artwork described above, this Castellan miniature is perhaps the Templariest Templar model GW has created. The existence of a Primaris Initiate implies the existence of Primaris Neophytes – the other half of the Templars’ Crusade Squads, these guys are newer, less experienced Astartes who pair with a single Initiate for guidance and training. The Sword Brethren come armed with heavy bolt pistols and either chainswords or power swords, and a mix of the unit's members can upgrade to other weapons. Not all of the units can take the same weapons though, and most are limited to one member in a four-man unit. The box provides enough for two pyre pistols, and one of each plasma pistol, power maul, power axe, a set of paired lightning claws, or a thunder hammer.

I was reading Spears of the Emperor by Aaron Dembski-Bowden while working on this model and it inspired me to go with an aged and worn look on the banner and white on the model to help convey the desperate struggle the Space Marines fight. There will also be a multi-melta which will become a BT vehicle option. It’ll replace the stubber on Primaris vehicles. I'm okay to do conversions, since that's a big thing in Mordheim, and I have a Saturn 2 8K 3d printer as well. I wasn't sure if I should find some 3d printable bits to add on as conversions, or if the Upgrade Kit is my better bet. Even if I were to print out the bits, I'm not sure which models I could put what bits on! It's a whole new world for me. Honestly, this is a pretty decent upgrade kit, you can even use it to turn marines into Neophytes. With all the heads, shoulder pads, and weapons, this can take your existing force pretty easily into the new book.Thats a lame response. You can always choose to represent your primaris as firstborn but the actual question is whether the model is primaris or not Overall we have to say this update is pretty awesome and just full of really cool minis. Looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of new BT armies out there soon! A lot of thought has gone into the kit, which allows you to build every model with a chainsword and pistol or with a bolt carbine or rifle. “The latter option leaves enough leftover parts to upgrade a regular box of Intercessors or Assault Intercessors with chained weapons,” says Maxime. There will be two Crusader Squads: the old one that everyone knows and a new one made up exclusively of Primaris. The latter will be 5-11 Primaris Initiates, 4-8 Primaris Neophytes, and 1 Primaris Sword Brother. Neophytes will have 2W and 2A like other Primaris.

As such, the design team went all-in with the medieval look on these miniatures, from the now-classic tabard and leather belts to bowl cuts. The armour has been updated with Primaris details too – “it’s a kind of Mk III Scout armour designed by Cawl himself”. An ancient Mk II helmet from the days of the Great Crusade, the Crusader’s Helm is passed down to powerful orators to boost their voices by the power of Saint Sebatus’ jawbone contained within. It features a truly distinctive mono-visor and bears a striking resemblance to the helmet worn by High Marshal Helbrecht – perhaps made by the very same artisans all those millennia ago.The Sword Brother kit will have plenty of CC options and the option to make a Marshal (like with the Custodes Warden kit that gives you the option of making a Captain). In the revealed photos, the squad has been built with five Initiates, four Neophytes, and one Power Sword-armed Sword Brother. We don’t yet know whether the Crusader Squad in the army set (or the inevitable future standalone set) can be built with a different ratio of Initiates to Neophytes – but bear in mind that the unit will probably retain some version of the current Paired Combatants rule – meaning Neophytes gain a buff if there are more Initiates in the squad than Neophytes. We’ve no word on pricing or a release date, although– sinceGW commented in its revealarticle that the Templars’ army set would be “a perfect force for Helbrecht to lead”– we can be fairly sure he won’t be too far behind the army set. Now, if only we could see his rules… So far, those revealed include the Holy Orb (a one-time mortal wound-dealing perfume hand grenade which, like its predecessor in the 4th Edition codex, is a direct reference to the 1975 movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail) and the Icon of Heinmann, which cancels out most weapons’ AP to make one of your Sergeants or Sword Brethren a chunk more survivable.

I really hope players and GW take more notes from this box. It’s just really promising to see the actual bits for these named Relics. BT player can just buy the upgrade kit and model a Marine with the Relic! And they are unique enough to actually stand out. GW could do this for literally every army in the game — they have created special relics for them in the rules, now they have the ability to model new bits for each one as well. Loadout-wise, it looks like the new Crusader Squad can mix up wargear more freely than other Primaris units. Photos show Initiates with Pyreblasters; Bolt Rifles, Auto Bolt Rifles, and Heavy Bolt Pistol / Astartes Chainsword combos, while the Neophytes are seen to carry either Bolt Carbines or Bolt Pistol / Chainsword combos.

Black Templars Expansion

In a first for an upgrade sprue, you’ll also be able to equip the Relics you collect in your Crusade missions on your Heroes for that fervent narrative touch.
