When I heard that a box set based on Time Out of Mind was imminent, I went back to the original album with fresh ears.But something different happens to “Not Dark Yet” and “Mississippi” when the players fiddle with them: They become different songs.

Critics even suggested it might be the final great Bob Dylan album – it wasn’t of course, but, as it turned out, Time Out of Mind, was the last album Dylan made with a producer – all his records since have been self-produced, under the pseudonym Jack Frost. Bob is always capable of pulling surprises within different versions of the same song, so it is all there to argue about, enjoy or not.The first alternate take is in a different key, sending Dylan’s voice into a higher register and the song into ill-fitting sunlight; it’s a harmless little ramble. In 1996-97 Dylan wrote eleven tracks about growing old and these tunes are full of heartbreak and loss. However, the outtakes and alternate versions on discs 2,3 and 4 are so good that the box is still a 5 star purchase.
