About this deal

This is because the micro foam is much more velvety and consistent which make it much easier to pour latte art. Available in three matte colourways, SMEG’S new BCC02 is altogether more contemporary-looking than the cheaper ECF01BL above. Modern touches include an illuminated dispenser that moves up and down to accommodate different-sized cups, an easily removable drip tray (useful if you want to fill up even taller travel mugs) and a removable grounds tray behind it. Warning LEDs even tell you if you’re out of beans, water, or if you need to descale the machine. Not everyone can afford to spend this kind of money on a bean-to-cup coffee machine, but the PrimaDonna Soul does genuinely justify its asking price. It creates a huge range of drinks – 21 to be precise – and the milk carafe means that it takes just one prod of the touchscreen to produce a very pleasant cappuccino or latte. What sets it apart from the cheaper machines, however, is the Bean Adapt feature: this helps to eke far more flavour from every type of coffee bean than the average automatic machine. It’s almost impossible to resist the ease of a Nespresso machine. They come ready to go out of the box and each time you want a coffee, you only need to pop a pod in the top and press a single button. It’s totally mess free.

The results speak for themselves, with fantastic espresso and milk-based coffees delivered with a minimum of hassle. If you want the kind of coffee that bean-to-cup machines can only dream of producing, but don’t have the patience to master the fully manual approach, the Barista Touch Impress is a revelation. There’s a built-in steam wand and you can adjust milk temperature and texture to get different milky coffees just right. This is because there is more time to heat the milk when it starts off cold and you’ll avoid over steaming and the milk tasting burnt.Whether you’re a fan of cappuccino, macchiato, espresso, mocha, ristretto or just plain-old filter coffee, only the very best coffee machines will make you the coffee you want time after time. Thing is, choosing the right machine for you depends not only on your favourite type of coffee, but also on how much time, effort and money you want to invest in the brewing process. Everyone wants to be able to make a barista-standard coffee at home, but in reality it’s harder than it looks. Or at least that’s the conclusion we drew on our hunt for this year’s best coffee machines. There were so many things to consider. Pod or Espresso machine? Nespresso, Smeg or Sage? Do you need a built-in grinder? Where to even begin? Coffee pod machines: These machines are generally simple to use, fast, and mess-free, and coffee pods also tend to stay fresher for longer than beans or grounds. You can only make one cup at a time, though, and some pods aren't always recyclable – ESE (easy serve espresso) pods are a good compostable alternative.

Oat milk - I find oat milk the easiest to steam out of all the alternative milks on offer (that I have tried to steam), especially the barista versions (the team at Oatly are doing a grand job). Almond Milk - I find that it really does depend on the brand when it comes to almond milk. I remember using a fresh organic almond milk at one coffee shop I used to work in that would not foam. I would recommend using Almond Breeze Barista Blend if you’re serious about the Almonds. This is a neat and handsome number that’ll save you costly trips to a high-street coffee shop. It’ll brew two cups in one go and just 25 seconds, so it’s as speedy as a capsule machine. The downside for coffee connoisseurs? It can’t grind your beans, but you could go for a separate grinder to take this on. If, however, you want more of a helping hand but still want the very best espresso, then consider Sage’s Oracle Touch instead: it has the same coffee-making skills as the Dual Boiler, but adds a touchscreen and a few hand-holding features to help you make the perfect coffee time after time.

Simply scroll across the touchscreen to choose your coffee of choice from the 19 options (I like a latte), press go and both the coffee and milk will pour themselves. If you prefer, you can detach the milk carafe and attach a steaming wand instead. Aficionados can also customise temperature, grind size, volume, strength and pre-infusion and save preferred combos to one of four profiles for easy access. This is, in my humble opinion, the king of home coffee machines. For anyone who has done even cursory research into the world of coffee geekery, it will come as no surprise to see this Sage machine in the top spot on this list. Similarly, Sage is Jimenez’s top brand recommendation. Here’s why. As espresso machines go, this is an affordable choice. Its slimmed-down silhouette is useful if, like me, your kitchen is on the smaller side, and it’s the perfect entry-level espresso machine as you can use either freshly ground coffee or ESE (easy serve espresso) pods without compromising on taste and performance.
