About this deal

Making photos with this camera is the easy part. Making a good one, however, is a tad more difficult. But at least I know I can’t blame the camera. Note: If you are interested in the AF capabilities of the X70, I highly suggest you read our in-depth article about the X-T1’s autofocus capabilities after firmware update 4.0. Everything written there also applies to the X70. The X70 has 49 AF points (shown in Single Point AF mode) The first thing you’ll notice when you turn on the X70 is a prompt asking whether you want to use the camera in High or Low performance mode. In High mode, the AF is faster and the time it takes for the camera to restart is reduced. In Low mode, a power saving mode is activated to prolong the battery life. The power management menu With respect to small cameras (GR, RX100IV, LX100, G7X and X70), I choose the X70 for several reasons not which fall into "best camera" category. Yes, GR has slightly sharper lens (natively), but X70 only requires a small amount of sharpening to equal GR. The X70 color, JPEG quality and lower, high ISO noise exceed the GR IMHO. Smaller than the X100 range, with a lens as sharp as those we can fit to the pro-spec Fuji X Pro, and a focal length that’s arguably perfect as an every-day carry, this camera seems to incorporate all the best elements of Fuji’s recent work. There are a few tiny problems and certainly some quirks that might bother certain shooters, and we’ll get to those. But first, let’s take a closer look at everything that makes the X70 a machine worth writing about.

I have even used it as my sole camera to shoot a “Babyque”! A Babyque is a baby shower held around a BBQ. At a Launceston bowling club, I captured the whole event with the X70 and produced far more candid and relaxed images of everyone present. On the rear of the Fujifilm X70, there is the usual customisable D-pad. Directly above the D-pad, there is a small space for your thumb to rest with a small rubber pad and nub for greater grip. Would a foray with the X70 or X-A3 be a good way to try out Fuji? (I know the X70 is fixed lens). Or just wait and get X-T2 perhaps. Manual control dials instead of menus are important to me.

The X70 is also a great gift for your favorite photographer or a photo hobbyist who appreciates well-made cameras. The ability to match previous X models for long exposures in a compact body is a powerful draw for many LE photographers and again I’m delighted to report they’ll find the X70 very similar in practice. We’ve never come across any significant issues regarding sharpness or detail reproduction in the RAW files, although some users have complained that Adobe Lightroom doesn’t reproduce the greens in foliage as well as other software programs like Iridient Developer or PhotoNinja. Personally, we enjoy using Lightroom because it is easy to organise your images and it includes colour profiles that reproduce the look of Fujifilm’s film simulation modes, but you may feel differently. X70, 10s, f/8, ISO 200 – RAW file post-processed in Lightroom X70, 1/220, f/2.8, ISO 200 – RAW files post-produced in Lightroom Some of you may be wondering how it compares to its main rival, the Ricoh GR II. Well, we managed to get our hands on one for a couple of weeks and the comparison will be online very soon. For looking up, pull out the LCD and use it to rest the X70 at any upward angle you like. It works great!

Stripped, offshored, no viewfinder version of the fabulous X100 series at a great price and still offering fabulous quality. Borrowing many inputs from the world of smartphones, the touch screen feels entirely natural in use. When shooting, we’re able to select the point of focus with a touch of the screen, which is more responsive than you might imagine. This method of focusing works well, with a thumb on the touch screen and a finger on the shutter release, rapid focusing in situations that require speed is streamlined in a way that truly surprised me. There’s also a mode in which touching the point of focus also releases the shutter, which is even faster. As said, it works well enough, but to be honest I’m not a big fan of touch screens on cameras. Call me old, or maybe it’s that fingerprints are unappealing, but I prefer a physical button. As I mentioned above, the battery life isn’t bad if you use the camera in Low performance mode but it is still a good idea to carry at least two for a full day of shooting. It takes the same batteries as the X100T. Unfortunately, the camera doesn’t come with a battery charger, so your only options are to either charge it via USB or buy a separate charger. Wireless CapabilitiesDSLRs cover an entire spectrum, as well as their lenses, so comparing to one doesn't mean that much, but just for fun let's shoot it against an inexpensive Canon T6 DSLR with its kit 18-55mm IS II lens.
