Overall, they are raising the demand for Tequila and allowing consumers to try new Tequilas, thus giving smaller brands a chance to grow, albeit at a slower pace.

Like wine and other unique spirits, tequila is produced according to regulations that govern its appellation of origin. Tequila may only be made in the state of Jalisco, which includes the town of Tequila, and parts of the surrounding states of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit and Tamaulipas. It must be made from blue agave and in accordance with additional rules for ingredients and aging. Spirits made using other agave species or elsewhere in Mexico are classified as mezcal. Jose would go on to earn a degree in economics from the University of Dallas, and in 1997 he founded the Casa Noble tequila brand. The original concept for the brand was to take something as quintessential as Mexican tequila and create an upscale, quality brand that could counteract the negative perception of the spirit that was common in the late 1990s. He partnered with Carlos Hernandez, who owned an estate in Mexico, and together they started growing, harvesting, and distilling their own spirits. Casa Noble is one of several organic-certified tequila brands, but that’s not why it’s good. No, this is good tequila because it’s a crisp, spicy, flavorful, and very versatile spirit. The brand underwent a redesign in 2021, changing the bottles from their former squat, boxy shape to more elegant decanter-style glass. The liquid has been updated as well, with a focus on barrel selection and blending, and eliminating the single barrel releases you could once find. According to founder and master distiller Jose “Pepe” Hermosillo, this means the reposado and anejo expressions are created by “selecting different barrels according to characteristics and integrating up to 14 lots to create complexity and balance.” These aged expressions spend a longer amount of time maturing than some other brands, with the anejo aged for two years in French oak barrels and the reposado for 364 days. All of the tequila is triple distilled, and the distillery implements many sustainable practices. Marques de Casa Noble came out in 2022, a blend of 12 extra anejo and 9 anejo tequilas matured from one to five years in specially selected French oak barrels that were aged for three years before being filled.Casa Noble is a brand of premium 100% blue agave tequila produced by the Casa Noble Tequila Company. It is a CCOF certified organic tequila. Casa Noble is distributed in the United States by Constellation Brands Inc. The tequila is made from estate-grown agaves cooked in traditional stone ovens; these are naturally fermented and distilled three times. [1] Casa Noble Reposado and Añejo are aged in White French Oak. [1] PH: Agave is a plant that takes at least 6 to 7 years to mature, and at Casa Noble, we only use agave plants that are 10 to 12 years in maturity to make our Tequila. Over time, the price has been very cyclical. The balance of supply and demand has produced lows of 0.80 pesos a kilo to peaks of 30 plus pesos a kilo. While Casa Noble grows their agave on this estate, they actually use the separate Tequilera Hacienda La Cofradia distillation facility for their spirits. They do disclose that on the label, and I give them some extra points for this level of transparency. According to sources, Casa Noble represents 90% of the tequila made at the facility and is one of the factors that allows them to maintain the high standards they set. Whether you’re at an A-list after party or just chilling at home, nothing beats a “Casamigos and soda” for a refreshing, celeb-approved drink. Each batch is distilled for a minimum of two months in stainless steel barrels, and delivers a nice mix of sweet agave, light citrus and just a hint of vanilla. Like all of Casa Noble’s offerings, this one is certified organic, and has a limited number of bottles in select cities around the country. It’s best sipped slow for a warm, inviting mouthfeel.

The “ultra-premium highlands tequila” uses all the beverage buzz words, like “small batch production,” and “distilled in handmade copper pot stills.” But beyond the hype, it’s a smooth, easy to drink option; naturally sweetened with the rich aroma of mature agave plants, with a clean finish. The pool of celebrity-owned tequila gets deeper by the day. Over the past few years, everyone from George Clooney to Rita Oro has dived into the action. Casa Noble was one of the first brands to align with an A-lister. In 2011, Carlos Santana became part-owner. However, his stake was bought only three years later when Constellation Brands acquired the brand. It Has a Unique Connection to Robert Mondavi Tequila may be bottled without maturation or aged in oak barrels. The length of aging determines how it is labeled: Colorless blanco or silver tequila is aged fewer than two months in oak; reposado between two and 12 months; añejo for more than one year. Extra añejo is a category added in 2006 that includes tequila aged at least three years in oak vats under 600 liters. Generally, the longer tequila ages in oak, the smoother and more full-bodied it becomes. JM: Cask-finished Tequila, once a rarity, is increasingly common. What cask finishes/liquids best complement Tequila's aroma and flavor profile?

You’ve also probably seen flavored tequila, which is tequila infused with things like coconut, lime, strawberry or jalapeno. While they may be fun for a party or to use in mixed drinks, we recommend skipping these bottles the rest of the time and just drinking tequila straight up. Why mess with a good thing? Types of Tequila: Just like whiskey, there are different types of tequila, that run the spectrum in terms of flavor, color and potency. What branding they did put on the bottle is small, impactful, and elegant. The label is a small square of paper at the bottom of the bottle with the brand information and the signature of the founder, done as if it was an aged piece of parchment. The logo is actually made of metal and glued onto the front of the bottle, which looks great. The consumer demand in recent years for premium Tequila elevated agave prices to price levels never seen before, but this has stabilized as a high planting volume occurred in the past seven years. These plantings have created an inventory of more than a billion agaves. Currently, prices have gone from 30+ pesos a kilo in the open market to around 16 pesos. The demand for Tequila is still strong, and with a healthy inventory of agave, it looks like the spirit has a bright future. Adam Levine’s Calirosa mashes up classic tequila-making techniques and California wine know-how for a bottle of tequila that tastes as unique as it looks. The brand’s Añejo expression begins with 100% blue weber agave, which is double distilled and then aged 18 months in ex-California wine barrels. These wine barrels let the spirit age in a different direction (don’t worry; it doesn’t taste like wine), and impart the unique rosy glow that gives Calirosa its name. For their tequila, Casa Noble uses 100% blue agave plants that are grown and harvested on their own private farm. They refer to this as “estate grown”, borrowing a phrase from the Scottish tradition. Agave plants grow for around seven years before they are harvested by hand, have their leaves shaved, and are shipped off to the distillery. I almost thought I had grabbed the wrong bottle when I took a sip, because there’s an immediate smoky flavor that was nowhere to be found in the aroma. It unfolds and lays the groundwork for the rest of the profile, but isn’t overwhelming or unpleasant — instead, it provides a bit of complexity to what comes next. Casamigos is a favorite among the Hollywood crowd, thanks to its co-founder George Clooney, but it’s actually got a lot of substance to go with its style. One of the smoothest, most natural tasting tequilas on our list, Casamigos is made in the Jalisco highlands from 100% agave. Clooney, and co-founder Rande Gerber, say they wanted to make, “the best-tasting, smoothest tequila that didn’t have to be covered up with salt or lime.”

We like the Maestro Dobel 50, a smooth and complex Extra Añejo Cristalino that’s aged in American and Eastern European oak barrels, then twice-distilled in copper pot sills. A final proprietary filtration process gives the cristalino the sparkling crystal-clear appearance from which it gets its name. PH: I don’t necessarily see these other sources of agave posing a threat to the Tequila industry in Mexico. What makes Mexican Blue Webber agave so unique is the terroir and the industry’s experience creating amazing spirits with farmers, distillers and producers. Other agave producers worldwide won’t have the same flavor profiles that Mexican agaves can produce, so I think there is space for these other agave products – they won’t be the same as traditional Tequila. Producers continued making mezcal with Mexico’s many agave species, but it became clear that one particular plant delivered the best spirits. In 1902, Alsace-born botanist Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber classified this species as Agave tequilana Weber azul, or Weber blue agave.JM: Agave spirits are being produced throughout South America. Blue agave is being grown in Australia, South Africa, and the southwest United States. What kind of a challenge will these other sources of agave spirits pose to the Tequila industry in Mexico? Silver (or “Blanco”) tequila is probably the most well-known, and it typically appears perfectly clear in the bottle. This is tequila that’s only aged for a few weeks, so it doesn’t have time to develop the color and characteristics that come from a longer aging process. Silver tequila is great to drink on its own, but it’s great for mixed drinks as well. It will typically taste sweeter and more refreshing, with a smooth, silky finish. You still get the herbal agave in the spirit coming through, and the citrus flavors we’ve been seeing work well with the Cointreau and lime juice. I think it still might be a touch bitter for some, but I found the overall result a refreshing change from the usual overly-sweet margaritas we tend to see. A silky and savory tequila, Chamucos goes as well with Baja fish tacos as it does with a simple lime slice. A carefully handcrafted tequila produced in small batches, the Chamucos Blanco features notes of vanilla, citrus, cinnamon and fennel. It’s fresh and flavorful, with just the right amount of spice and a hint of earthiness. The tequila finishes with a little heat before going down smooth.
