I think we'll get hurt a lot in this life, but maybe it's worth it because sometimes we will experience really amazing things, too. Maybe not everything will end in hurt. But we'll never know if we don't try.”

My conclusion: it has a lot of the puzzle pieces of a good novel, but they just didn't fit together. Claire is at a crossroads in her life, she feels like her life needs to be readjusted and she thinks that Rome holds the key. While in Rome she meets a group of nuns and she thinks that she may join a convent. A past love reappears in her life and throws her trajectory off. Will love change her plans? A cozy romance with delightful characters. Not a difficult lie; many classmates did look wonderful. But she couldn't help noticing that those who looked most wonderful were the ones who did look different. The women who'd gone gray, the men who'd gone bald, everyone who'd settled into their skin and was doing no more for their skin than grinning into the showerhead each morning. From nationally bestselling, award-winning author Liam Callanan, the story of an opportunity to start over at midlife, a chance to save a struggling convent in the Eternal City, and the dramatic re-emergence of an old flame . . .

So much that question assumed: that one had the freedom to choose what came next, that one had a clue what to choose if one did, that someone would tell the truth when they answered.” I adored this book. Maybe part of it was that it had tied to Milwaukee, where I live. I recognized some of the things the Claire had done. Cancel that Alitalia flight. All the fun of a trip to Italy—and a Yale education, for that matter—can be found for a fraction of the price in Liam Callanan’s delightful novel When In Rome. With breathtaking descriptions of secret corners of the Eternal City and New Haven, this novel introduces us to Claire, who, at 52, is ready to resolve issues of faith, passion, and obligation that have dogged her since she was 22. Only she has to think about things a little longer. So hold on. And while you wait, prepare to be charmed by this clever, engagingbook.” If only Monica really was coming. Claire has outpaced her Italian skills, made musing fact. Claire's been daydreaming, pretending, and now Paolo seems to think Monica really is en route. When in Rome отразява нашето захващане за сламка в реалния живот. Всеки търси отдушник, търси общност и цел, за да не е сам. Да се чувства нужен, полезен, все още можещ. Все още не толкова самотен.When Noah Walker finds Amelia on his front lawn in her broken-down car, he makes it clear he doesn’t have the time or patience for celebrity problems. He’s too busy running the pie shop his grandmother left him and reminding his nosy but lovable neighbors to mind their own damn business. Despite his better judgment, he lets her stay in his guest room—but only until her car is fixed—then she’s on her own. One thing that didn't work in the novel were the characters. We're told that Claire is successful and beautiful (despite the fact that she doesn't wear makeup or care about clothes - I hate that trope), and yet she seems to not really have a personality and can't seem to make up her mind. Having doubts or taking time to make a decision to become a nun is completely logical, and yet in this book Claire's waffling comes across as really annoying. Monica is one of the biggest unlikable busy-bodies I've ever read, and even Claire's daughter Dorothy comes across as entitled. Monica would say, add a cup of sugar, what the hell, or Monica would tell her not to, what are you thinking? But what Claire's been thinking lately is that Monica's been telling her what to do for thirty years in matters large and small. It helps, and does not, that Monica is usually right.

And so, at this reunion, a new project with a new prompt, less question, Claire thought, than curse: When in Rome is a delightful story about new beginnings, second chances and searching for one's calling. At the age of 52 Claire is at a crossroads and her wish to start over leads her to Rome. As a real estate agent her passion is old buildings. But she has more than one reason to visit a lovely convent. As a teenager becoming a nun was her dream and calling but she hadn't pursued it. Is the answer now obvious? My Audrey Hepburn–loving heart is so happy! When in Rome isa delectable romance, sweet and satisfyingas a slice of warm apple pie.” —Chloe Liese, author of the Bergman Brothers series

No," Claire says, and it is a moment before she herself understands. The thought of untangling this is exhausting, and so she doesn't, but it gives her an idea. She tells Paolo ciao, he gives her outfit one more look, up and down, and then she's out the door. I requested this because I was intrigued by the setting--I have a lot of fond memories of Rome--and because the premise of Claire hanging out with three nuns in a convent to figure out her relationship to religion feels unique. While the descriptions of Rome's food, culture, and beauty are compelling and lush, unfortunately, I disliked the characters. (Well, all the characters except the nuns. The nuns are hilarious, and I would love to hang out with them.) Sarah Adams, who was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, adores her family, sunny days, and putting others at ease. Since she was a young girl, Sarah has had the desire of being a writer. When her girls were taking naps and she had no more justifications to put it off, she finally penned her first book. What a beautiful and stirring book this is. Callanan has done maybe the most impossible thing - written a book about faith, that thing we can neither hold nor see, but something he's made palpable through Claire's remarkable journey.”
