Traditionally the white of the paper provides the brilliance to water colour and can be used as highlights. With a middle body able to hold a good reservoir of colour, Sable hair has excellent spring and resilience. This pocket-sized box has an integral mixing palette with 12 assorted Cotman watercolour half pans, plus a Sceptre pocket brush. The variety of colours is insane, especially in comparison to my old watercolour palette which was so limited.The distillation of petroleum yields an ever widening range of organic pigments which are often termed as 'modern'.

There is no difference in quality between tube watercolour and half pans, the difference is in the application. This pocket-sized set is ideal for outdoor watercolour painting, as it has a curated colour palette that suits those new to watercolour and experienced artists alike, along with a travel brush.

If using a six colour mixing system we would recommend Lemon Yellow Hue, Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue, Ultramarine, Intense Blue, Permanent Rose and Cadmium Red Hue. The pans are well put together and easy to use and the small paintbrush which came in the set is practical too. Cotman Water Colours are a range of water colours that are made to a high quality standard but are kept to an economical level by replacing some of the more costly pigments with less expensive alternatives.This is a well designed box of half pans, with a good open and close mechanism, unlike several other brands which seem to have very cheap catches on their boxes which I assume will not last well. Natural hair brushes, particularly Red Sable brushes, tend to be favoured by artists working with watercolour.
