About this deal

Between January and March 1952, the journalist Ian Fleming wrote Casino Royale, his first novel, at his Goldeneye estate in Jamaica. Major plot elements from the novel were also incorporated into the Bond films For Your Eyes Only in 1981 and Licence to Kill in 1989. Nevertheless, he wanted to show the story to the directors David Lean and Carol Reed for their impressions, although nothing came of Korda's initial interest. Bond remembers his last meeting with M, which directly references the “great gambling case in which he had been involved at Royale-les-Eaux” when a Russian assassin carved a letter in the back of his hand, marking him as a spy. I don’t remember this being mentioned in Casino Royale, so this could be the first mention of the cover name for Bond’s employers.

Fleming was very successful in developing the James Bond character throughout the series, and he does so here in a manner that tells us that yes, this is the same character as before, but now we’re going to see more of his layers, making him more three-dimensional. Mr Big is described as being intellectually brilliant, [38] with a "great football of a head, twice the normal size and very nearly round" and skin which was "grey-black, taut and shining like the face of a week-old corpse in the river". Bond attempts the swim, but Big's men pick up on his bubble trail and chum the waters to create a feeding frenzy.Having said that, I think this new version of LALD shows that we are all on the cusp of a brave new age of positive literature and that can only be doubleplusgood. As Tee-Hee forcefully escorts Bond to the top of a staircase in the warehouse, Bond manages to break free and kicks him down the stairs.

This racism reflected not only a pronounced theme of interwar adventure writing, such as the novels of [John] Buchan, but also widespread literary culture. The lovely internal pages are clean, bright and flat with no bent pages, no handling marks, no stains and no foxing. Savoye, comparing the structure of Live and Let Die with Casino Royale, believes that the two books have open narratives which allow Fleming to continue with further books in the series. Barest trace of marginal toning and bits of faint foxing, else beautiful, with no bumps to extremities. No inscriptions, contents clean, edges slightly toned, gilt still bright (often tarnished), jacket lightly worn with one tear and associated crease to upper.
