About this deal

Milo studies the people on the subway and imagines their lives—some living sad lives, or living in luxury, but something unexpected happens that causes him to rethink the lives he’s assigned to his fellow riders. For example, the man in the green hat lives in a fifth floor walk-up where, “Parakeets tweet songs of longing as the man sips tepid soup, hunched over a game of solitaire. I have had seasons of life when a regularly recurring event had me feeling that way, so filled with anticipation I could hardly stand it, but with trepidation mixed in. Milo Imagines the World is a warm and richly satisfying story from the award-winning and New York Times bestselling picture book duo, about a little boy with a big imagination who learns that you can't know anyone just by looking at them.

And then, Milo notices that one of his assumptions was way off base, and reimagines a different scenario. It moves away from the uniqueness of the situation, instead focusing on the near normality of visiting an imprisoned mom. No paints, just what appears to be crayons and colored pencils (though those aren’t listed on the publication page, so I guess they’re all digital too). Lived there eleven years or so, and over the years I’ve seen an awful lot of picture books set there.Inspired by Christian Robinson’s childhood experiences, Milo Imagines The World is a beautiful story that reminds us all not to judge a book by its cover. Is it possible that looks don't necessarily tell you everything you need to know about someone else's story?

The children in the ink, paint, and collage digital spreads show a variety of emotions, but most are happy to be at school, and the surroundings will be familiar to those who have made an orientation visit to their own schools.

This question prompts a new illustration and several questions about what others might assume about his life: can they see his studiousness? Readers of Milo Imagines the World will feel compassion stacked on top of heartache on top of humility on top of hope. In this book, we follow a young boy named Milo as he and his older sister take their monthly Sunday subway ride to visit their mother. One then wonders how Milo might be remapping his royal assumptions about the life of this well-dressed White boy.

As Milo and his sister greet their mother, wearing the same orange outfit as the other prisoners, the suited boy also seems to be visiting his mother. While the days are given ordinal numbers, the song skips the cardinal numbers in the verses, and the rhythm is sometimes off: “On the second day of kindergarten / I thought it was so cool / making lots of friends / and riding the bus to my school! Two rock star artists collaborate, but as with all of de la Pena’s picture book work (he also does YA, that I am more familiar with and like better), this is too long, has too many words for what it needs. This is hard stuff but it is also necessary for kids to see and its a story that is told in such a gentle, loving way.
