4Chan and the Alt Right: How best to study them - War Studies - London

Workshop: 4Chan and the Alt Right: How best to study themWith events such as the Christchurch attack, increasing attention is being paid to the subversive role of platforms such as 4Chan and 8Chan. Particular attention has been paid to the production of memes and destructive coordinated action on such sites and how these have been mobilised by the 'Alt-Right'. However, the structure and anonymity of such platforms makes studying them particularly challenging. The purpose of this open workshop is to explore different methods interested researchers are employing to study these activities across the wide variety of departments at King's.This is an opportunity to learn from other colleagues conducting or considering research into such groups across the university. It will take the form of an open discussion with the aim of developing a toolbox of methods to use, separately or in combination, to gain a deeper understanding of the role of such platforms in contemporary politics. PhD and MA students studying these groups are also welcome to attend.
